problem creating 2048 x 2048 textures?

I have recently been trying to make some 2048 x 2048 textures, but cannot get them to load in game.

I can create 1024 x 1024 textures in gimp, and they load in game with no problems. I have the Hi-Res colour mod loaded and working ok, and I have just tried the high res desert map by Uufflakke, and that also works fine so I know my game install runs 2048 textures.

However when I try to load a map with a 2048 texture that I have created, the map refuses to load and I get an error message. I made sure I indexed the 2048 tga to reduce it from 16mb to 4mb, but other than that I'm stumped as what to try.

If I edit the map load.ini to load a 1024 texture I have created then all is ok.

Does anyone have any suggestions please? If someone has successfully created a 2048 texture with gimp could they tell me if there is anything different to that of making a 1024 texture?

Do not merge layers, do not index, leave in rgb mode. save as:(skin name.bmp) when the window comes up, hit flatten image, then in the next window click on +advanced options, there select 24 bit color. Save.
