Random Mechanical Failure's
« on: February 16, 2013, 11:20:40 PM »

Not sure if this has been posted before or not but..

Has anyone played FSX? Remember the random mechanical failure option they had, where certain parts would fail, such as gear, flaps, engine parts, whole engine's, fuel tank leak, ect.

Any chance we could have something like that in IL-2 for more realism? (remember, even combat pilots faced these problems..  ;) )

funny thing is, the game seems to cater for such things - i have seen it referenced.
however, it doesn't seem to be implemented, as i've not had random failures in all my years of IL-2.
it'll take someone with better code know-how to make it work, but i think it is possible. ;)

In Lock On you can choose which part will fail and when, or leave all at random, was a nice feature to learn some tricks,

Perhaps better not implement it- my fav Japanese bird is the Ki.61 which had an extremely unreliable engine IRL. I would hardly be able to complete a Ki.61 mission if reliability were modelled!

  • IL2 without Mods is possible,but senseless!

I wish those failures would be implemented some day by a genius modder. Gives the special immersion kick and make IL-2 to a real combat flight sim.

Yeah something i would like to see aswell, i mentioned a similar thing it a while ago but it came to nothing. Would be great if  aircraft could have defects/malfunctions specific to them.

For example early Typhoons had a quite high engine failiure rate especially on take off, P-51's ammo jamming in high G turns etc.

If you think about it a lot of these defects are already there, they occur when a plane gets damaged. If a way could be thought of to 'fake' damage to a plane at random then there could be a possibility maybe of replicating some sort of malfunctions.

Wish this could be tied into the mission builder.  You could set up a trigger box so that when the player flew through that area it would trigger the malfunction.  It would seem totally random to the player.

Would it be possible to add a option to this in a checkbox under mission builder? Such as, for an example, G forces. You can select and un-select that option, which would turn G's on or off.

If we managed to code random mechanical failures, could we have the option to turn it on or off (for our friends here whose airplanes tend to fail...)?

Actually 4.10.1 already has Reliability in the Difficulty settings, unfortunately, I cannot find what this setting does specifically, though I read somewhere it affects enigine reliability. I have seen it cause some acft (AI specifically) to not start resulting in the pilot jumping from the cockpit on the runway to run and complain to the ground crew and while he is gone, someone comes along and tows the plane off the runway so when the pilot gets back with the crew chief, the plane is missing and the pilot is yelling, "It was here just a minute ago!!!" Then the crew chief has to roll his eyes and pat the poor pilot on the head and say, "Now run along little pilot, I'll go find it for ya."

I think that it would be great to have this implemented. A little difficult to animate face expressions in humans of the game, but why not...

I was thinking about this some time ago. In my head I've made a concept about taking some more or less advanced damage code from some new plane, rework it, add random value like 1000 and set 1 or 2 o maybe 10 for each part to get damaged. And the implement this code into update section of Aircraft.class which is the base for all aircrafts in game. And even tie it up to some redundant difficulty setting.

This will probably require alot of time, but might be I'll try it one day.

EDIT:

Concept proven! It is totally possible. We will be as time goes by ;)

Cool! One of my main goals in IL-2 was to have like a shipping company, using C-47's, C-54's or any other transport airplane and flying them for an hour or two and land and "unload" (with every single option set on realistic). As you know, not every transport flight goes as planned, and adding a mechanical failure mod would be priceless.
