Ceylon (Sri Lanka)
« on: February 26, 2013, 07:10:54 PM »

I have personally never heard of the events on and near Ceylon during March/April 1942
and it surprised me that the Japanese are penetrated so far into the Indian Ocean!
I'm curious to see how the campaign runs later!

Maybe this is of interest to you:

British Eastern Fleet base was Gan (Seenu resp. Addu Atoll).
Quote
When Admiral Somerville inspected the base at Trincomalee, its deficiencies were clear to him. He found the port inadequate, vulnerable to a determined attack, and open to spying. An isolated island base with a safe, deep anchorage in a suitably strategic position was required. Addu Atoll met the requirements and it was secretly developed as a fleet anchorage.

Maybe you could include this base, but this would be then
700mls south-west of Ceylon on your map. Just a idea. :-X

@Gerax
I could not get working DEM data from the south area of Sri Lanka! Because of the time I really wanted to avoid even to tinker the southern part of India! Nevertheless,the current map only with Ceylon is 1:1 and is really big!
As an example, you need with a Prop ca. 1h 30 min from the south to the north coast of the island!

@farang
Got it, thanks!

I have the two necessary files to make a complete dem of Ceylon should you need it. These are for use in microdem ... if you need them, let me know ...

Hi agracier,
Ceylon is complete, but get no DEM data of the area around Addu atoll and to the east, what I believe is only water!
Thanks!

You're right about no data ... but if it's only water you need, you can create that by yourself very easily, just enlarge the water areas on the map, or make a new larger file and copy the dem .bmp into it ... fill up the rest with the same rgb water value ... and then crop for the 32 pixel thing ...

And also, if you have a rough idea of how the atolls look, and where they are approximately located, you can make them yourself as well ... as long as you have a good grey scale height map of the island itself, that is all that is necessary to create all the other files ... there is no real need for color elevation maps ... especially since atolls won't have much elevation to begin with. Essentially you only need to place the atolls for a first time on unformatted map_c and the rest can be derived from there ...

The map is allready enlarged! The problem is the current free time I have for hobbys (not much)! :-X
When I create Addu atoll in the southwest, I must also create the south of India in the northwest!
. . . will see how the final map looks . . . ! ;)

Lonestar, it was only a idea and no demand at all.  ;)
I just want you to inform about this Addi Atoll base.  ;)

No problem!
When I make a map, I think about before, what I really need from the area for the campaign later! The Addu Atoll is probably historically important, but will be later in the DCG campaign only a offmap position, because there is nothing noteworthy happened!
But I will make a compromise and add south Indian to the map! I think, maybe later a good map for any fictive Jet campaigns!
. . . and now the truth . . . I am also a bit lazy . . . ;)
