Jägerfaust for the Me-163
« on: March 08, 2013, 10:07:37 AM »

The most promising was a unique weapon called the Sondergerät 500 Jägerfaust. This consisted of a series of single-shot, short-barreled 50 mm (2-inch) guns pointing upwards. Five were mounted in the wing roots on each side of the aircraft. The trigger was tied to a photocell in the upper surface of the aircraft, and when the Komet flew under the bomber, the resulting change in brightness caused by the underside of the aircraft could cause the rounds to be fired. As each shell shot upwards, the disposable gun barrel that fired it was ejected downwards, thus making the weapon recoilless. It appears that this weapon was used in combat only once, resulting in the destruction of a Halifax bomber,[16] although other sources say it was a Boeing B-17.

Any way to model this? I know some of the night fighters have Sarge Muzik functional.

I know the guns can be mounted in any direction. Just place the same type that the Me-262-1a U4 uses in a vertical position.
the Photoeye effect maybe could be acomplished by giving the Me-163 a Phantom AI gunner with the guns fixed to a very limited vertical arc.
So when you fly under a bomber the AI should fire at the bomber.

Unless you modding geniuses can replicate it better another way.  Cuz I barely understand that magic.

That's really all there is for pictures and this Wikipedia Entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jagdfaust

And Phoenix is right, if youv'e ever played Lucas Arts Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe it was available for use.

the confusing thing is about tubes location.. i was sure it was on fuselage sides, or trials were made with "on field" wing barrels..

but was the most easy way to obtain kills on swotl, indeed.. left rockets armed, quick pass under a 17, profit. right rockets armed, another 17, repeat profit.. :D

Heres another info link with a better and color pic as the one above,
now you can see where the SG500 was..

A colour photograph of a destroyed Me 163B Komet (at Brandis airfield) showing the four holes in the port wing where the SG 500 'Jagerfaust/Jagdfaust' weapon was installed ('Me 163 Rocket Interceptor' by S. Ransom and H-H. Cammann).

Well Now we know the location they were, and the fact they truly exisited.

Does anyone think it could be modeled?

I would do it, If i understood what ever magic is needed

+1!!!

I actually had the same idea some months ago and was talking about it privately
with another member. They seemed to think it would be somewhat easy but it was the whole photosensitive thing that stumped us. But this phantom gunner idea sounds like a cool solution!
But, I am without "magic" as well so what do I know?

It would be great fun, though. And yes...SWOTL had it!!! Ahhh, wotta memory!

Of all the crazy ideas, they had to install this unto a 163-Komet rocket? That airplane is
filled with extremelly volatile fuels and fumes. Those crazy mad-scientists at work for the Reich again. LOL

I once read and also saw a similar rocket-tube weapons-system that was tested, or was going to be tested,
in a RAF Hurricane. Just behind the pilot there were a few rocket tubes firing upward. I am not sure if this
was also for real or a fictional idea.

That and the desperate need to win the war   :D

I started to pay more attention to the Komet lately, it's fun to use as it takes some skill, I'd like to see more stuff for it... even though there isn't much to do :3

You know, i wouldn't be surprised if there was a planned fighter version of the Greif. It looks like the luftwaffe was trying to do the same thing we did in vietnam with the F-4 and cram as many roles into one plane as possible, and with similar results as far as effectiveness goes.
I dont even think the 177 had enough speed to catch a B-24 or B-29 in the first place, unless they would have used it for a "proof of concept" aircraft.
