Asian Elephant with Mahout and boxes on back
« on: March 09, 2013, 04:27:46 AM »

In Il2 we have prenguins, bears, horses, camels, birds... but we lack a animal that was used in war during WW2, the mighty:

Asian Elephant MK.I

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_elephant

Was used by both sides during WW2, specially in Burma campaign, here some pics:

A Il2 version with a driver (called Mahout) ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahout  ) and some wooden boxes on back will be a great addition, specially now that we have a finished Burma map.

Thanks.

:D I had the same thought about requesting elephants while working on the map!  We have horses, why not elephants?  I guess the CBI doesn't get much attention.  I remember reading about pilots strafing elephants because they were so important to the Japanese war effort.  Poor elephants...I wonder how many were killed??

We really need big elephants for Asian maps, Indian maps and also African maps.

A few more big animal objects and civilian model-objects in the game would make maps come
alive.
The new maps look stunning with the new high-resolution landscapes, but without seeing
any life in them, it might as well be the planet Mars or a dead planet.

Glad you liked the request. Hope a mooder can create this animal for Il2.

The British used the elephant for their war effort in Burma. This will surprise many people for whom this will be a revelation. In fact both the Japaneseand the British usedthe elephantin the Burma campaign.

James Howard Williams (1897-58)

One man whose name stands out in the use of elephants during the war is Lieutenant colonel James Howard Williams. He organized an elephant corps and used it in facing the advancing Japanese during the campaigns in 1943-44. Popularly called 'elephant Bill’, he wrote a book about his experience in the war. It must be mentioned that he was mentioned in despatches 3 times during the war and in 1945 earned an OBE.

James had made Burma his home at the end of World War I where he was associated with the use of elephants for moving logs of wood and creating paths through the thick jungles. He developed a love for the elephant and began to understand the animal. When the Japanese attacked he used an elephant to transport his family to India. He returned soon and organized the elephant corps.

Elephants in WWII

He trained the elephants to help the engineering corps to make pontoon bridges. But the elephants worked for only 4 hours in a day, but in that period did more work than any human could do. The elephants were used to build thousands of bridges and clear the path through jungles for the allied troops to go forward. The Japs also used the elephants, but elephant bill was a class by him. At the end of the war no less a commander than Field Marshal Slim, commander XIV army acknowledged the tremendous work of Bill and his elephant corps. Elephant Bill is no more but we can remember him and his elephants in the campaigns in Burma.

He contributed his bit to an allied victory.

More pics of WW2 elephants:

The elephant role during war was mainly to help moving crates, artillery, clearing jungle roads...

I understand Archie. The polygon count has to be minimal for it to be Ok for the IL2 game.
I say it is a GREAT elephant. They will look great in many maps  ;)
