Hi, i just thought this first one was a cool pic. I have read of this battle, but never seen pics till now. This shot was taken from Essex on 14 October 1944. You can see the Japanese bomber in the center left releasing a torpedo. To the far right is the battleship USS Alabama (my favorite battleship of the war, she is anchored about 3 hours from my home) and a destroyer of Essex's screen... at some time during the fiercest part of this battle, USS Alabama's gun crews were so focused on hitting the torpedo planes bearing down upon Essex, that they didnt see a lone dive bomber coming overhead, until it was too late to stop his attack. Luckily his bombs narrowly missed, and caused no damage to Alabama, which finished the war with 9 battle stars, and never having been hit by enemy fire!

Oh yea, Navsource is the best! Thanks for the pics and the story. Steven Seagal did a movie on her, must have something to do wit her not ever being hit... :D

cool information BOYAN! You are talking about the movie Under Siege. I have never seen it. LOL  ;D But ten i didnt realise it was filmed on USS Alabama and the submarine USS Drum! Very cool! ill check it out.
