Mexican Expeditionary Force in the Pacific
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:48:14 AM »

To my utter surprise I found reference to a Mexican Expeditionary Force - the 201st Escuadron - that was attached to the Fifth Air Force in the Pacific. They were nicknamed 'the Aztec Eagles'.

I found the reference in the very colorful aviation art book 'War in Pacific Skies'.

Anyone ever heard of this? I thought that Mexico had wisely refrained from entering any of the 20th Century World Wars.

Yes, they flew P-47D's in the closing stages of the war. Many central and south American nations joined the Allied bandwagon once the outcome of the war was clear.

Yes they had some cool Paint jobs on their Planes, I wished I could remember where I saw them.

Here's an illustration of an Aztec Eagle in action on the Philippines.
painting by Jack Fellows

When I first glanced at the painting I thought - hmmm - Italian tail markings, then, hmmm - D-Day stripes (more or less), then US insignia on fuselage ...
