3D modeller programs
« on: March 30, 2013, 12:57:09 PM »

(First Im sorry for asking stupid things again and again but im in the "learning phase".)

So my simple question is which 3D modeller programs are compatible with the game?
In the modelling bible it says that only 3ds max 3-4-5 is compatible, but I've seen posts that some modders are using gmax (and google sketchup?)

For 3ds max which version are compatible since these old 3-4-5 version (I think) are no more avaible.

I've downloaded Gmax but it seemed buggy for me so I've downloaded a 3ds max 2011 version.

I want to use them for basic things like making static objects/buildings/landmarks. (For now...)

I hope I dont seem as idiot as i feel myself as i read my questions... :-[ :-[

Thank you for any answers!

Best wishes/Happy easter!!

Well it depends.

To use Maraz Exporter you need 3ds max though I cannot remember which version.
Buggy Buggy Exporter works with both 3ds max and g max.
Essentially using Dr Jones converter any 3d program that can properly export to .3ds format can be used to make .msh file

So those are your choices I guess
*Maraz Exporter & 3ds max --> easiest way to model especially if you build sth like ship which has hierarchy file and amny meshes
*Buggy Buggy Exporter & 3ds max or G max --> Needs some manual editing to get the mesh ready for il2. But it still works
*Dr Jones Exporter and a software that can export to .3ds --> Not recommended for start as ti needs to manually edit a lot of things in the created meshes sometimes & it's not as safe as the other 2 methods. Advantage is that you can even work on free programs like Blender 3d, Milkshape and so on.

I'm using max 2012 and Maraz exporter. So I would highly recommend that  :).

So its no risk to use newer versions of 3dsmax (if it works with 2012 version). Thats what I wanted to clear...

Big Thanks for your answers i think i will give Maraz exporter+3ds max a try. I've already made a "just try it out" modell since i did not made any other 3d work before. Its totally inacurate in details i just wanted to now how can i handle 3ds max. And its quite nice (for my eyes), and it took "only" about 4 hours work... ;D

Thanks again!!

All the best! Jack
