Blender Help
« on: April 11, 2013, 08:30:18 PM »

I have Blender for my current project, the BVP-212. Here's it's WIP Thread:
http://whatifmods.elementfx.com/forum/index.php?topic=36.0

I chose Blender as it is free (not like 3ds max, $1000+) and that it has a hole ton of things in it (that I never use haha) and that I think it is a good place to start for people like me who have no experience at all with 3D modeling.

I wonder if someone could explain to me the way someone builds an airplane in the Blender program or if they could give me a good tutorial.

 Thanks for your concern.

Blender interface can be a bit daunting at first but it's a powerfull program. I don't say it's 3dsMax but it's definatelly better than Gmax. Besides we should support open source projects.
So if you have not "played" with blender before I also recommend this:

Have fun!

Maybe this will be helpful a little ?  ;)

http://www.samoloty3d.pl/

It`s probably the only one that comprehensive and complete e-book about modelling planes in Blender...and for free !!!

Now it`s the second edition of this publication in Polish but English version is almost ready...

Have a nice flying ! ;)

Good Luck HotelAlpha,

I have done some work with Blender, and I think the hours you put into modelling a plane with Blender would not be wasted. But be aware that ultimately you will want to export your model to a format that MAX can use. Blender does this, sort of, but not perfectly.
For instance I wanted to submit my cockpit model to Team Daedalos, and they want the model with the complete Parent/Child heirarchy rather than a collection of individual meshes. I was able to use Blender to do this, but the only export format in Blender that kept the heirarchy and smoothing groups, etc was .fbx. Even so this format will require your MAX recipient to do a some adjustment to finish off the model.

Hello werewolf, thank you very much for the link to the e book, I purchased all three of the English versions. 8)

That should keep me out of mischief for a while. ;)

I have had a go with Gmax and managed to get the P-38 wings together using the tutorial for that, but I also have blender so now I have a set of tutorials hopefully some day I may manage to put an aircraft together, whether I actually get it in a sim is another matter. :D

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Just curious: what aircraft will you try and build?  ;)

Not entirely sure yet Peter, I would be venturing into unknown territory. 8)  The tutorial I have downloaded uses the P-40 as the base for the walkthrough, so it would make sense to follow that first.  My own preference for a first try would be the Westland Lysander, although Master Ranwers did post a WIP of that in the school some considerable time ago.   Maybe the Persian two seat Hurricane, I guess that could be done without actually building an entire aircraft.  Oh my, I guess I could go on forwever, the Avro Anson or any other of the twin trainer transports, single engined trainers such as the Miles Master, bombers like the Hampden, maybe things like the jet Provost series, the personal wish list is endless, finding the time, ability and enthusiasm would be a major obstacle though.  It would certainly be a major effort just to get through the tutorial, never mind actually getting the thing in any sim such as our beloved one.

I have now more or less completed the stationary planes mod for 4.11.1 so I will now hopefully take some time to go through the tutorial I have purchased, whether I actually have the ability to get through it and create a 3D model is another thing entirely.  :D

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

What about trying to refine and polish up that old old love of ours, Skippers frankenplane Ki-30 "Ann"? (a.k.a. Ki-51 & ki-31) VERY useful in all Asian theatres of war...  ;)

I guess there are quite a few of our treasured aircraft that could all do with a make over Peter, those are just two, but first we need enough people with the time and ability to do the work.  There is some 3D work already in progress that has transformed the Lancaster, He-219 and laterly the SeaFury, but these still have to see the light of day on the boards.  The big problem would be finding people to take up existing aircraft in sim rather than their own treasured wish list. ;)

As for me I still have to read the tutorial I have, and learn to use it, before I can even hope to take on any project.  The Ki-30 though I guess is a reasonably straight forward shape which would indeed be a good first attempt for anyone taking up 3D work.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D
