No problem. Did you notice the maps for Buna, Wewak and Salamaua? Of course, that would never be meant as a "hint", would it?

I downloaded a whole bunch for future use ... but another map almost finished was also amongst the downloads ... will be put to very good use ... thanks again.

A while back MrOblongo made a map of New Guinea.  His airfields had realistic looking layouts and were probably copied from real photos.  You could probably find that map and use those for your airfields.  They do use the visible runway plates.

I wonder if there is a way to make a more realistic looking airfield texture by taking a screenshot of an airfield like that, making it into a texture, and then using photoshop to make it look more natural.  The new airfield would then have the realistic layout plus look more realistic.

You took the words right out of my mouth ... on this map (and on Woodlark as well) I used actual satellite screenshots from Google Earth of still existent WWII airfields. Some made for very good airfield textures. The thing is to be able to find them on GE, Cause, believe me, the Earth is huge and it's not easy finding small things like airfields, even when you know the general vicinity.

For this map, Port Moresby, I went looking for the Kokoda airstrip on GE and low and behold it was there, not much changed from old WWII photos on the Pacific Wrecks site. I also found a gaggle of small strips around Efogi and these too will get onto the map ... these are all dirt strips, so they fit in well with the surrounding landscape and they are moreover readily visible from the air since they are reddish brown.

Excellent.  IMHO natural looking airfield textures are one of the most important features of a map.

Agracier,

I have historical layouts of all the airfields in this area taken from "Airdromes Guide Southwest Pacific Area" dtd Dec 1944 and Jul 1945, by Office of the Assistant Chief of Air Staff, A-3 Headquarters, Far East Forces, US Army.  Includes precise Long/Lat, runways and headings, Nav bearings and distances, precise locations diagrams, runway lengths and widths, terrain, landmarks, map maps of each airdrome including primary and alternate, runways, crash runway locations, supporting taxiways and parking areas, supporting road structures in and around airfields, etc, etc.  Formats are PDF, JPG and GIF.  Approximately 150MB in size.....

Should you need it.......

You bet I need it ... anything that will help with some historical accuracy in placing airfields. I've been looking around already of course and it looks like the area was dotted with small fields and what not ...

I had been hoping to get this map done before the summer, when I'll be off for a month or two without any map-making ability. But fixing up some new templates for a few of DreamK's new planes had me shift priorities - new planes are more urgent than a new map. And just as a teaser - another new one is coming up soon ...

So it won't be finished till autumn at earliest. But should you post the material you have, I can always see how it can be used ...

Thanks
