Artillery arc/range mod
« on: May 07, 2013, 07:57:34 AM »

If it is possible, a mod to see the arc and range of artillery pieces in the FMB would be extremely useful in their placement and aim

A little trick I use when setting up the artillery is to use smoke #7.
Place it out in front of what your shooting. It helps in lining up your guns.
After running a test for the mission remove said smoke and FIRE Away.
I hope this may help until some thing better comes along.

the way i envision this working, is to simply add a feature that gives the arty radius, similar to when you set a base, or target radius.
it need not even be changeable, but just to provide an easy way to help mission builders when setting up missions, to see when the arty will come into play.
this is the kind of mod our friend CY6 might be able to do something about, i hope he sees this.

I think there isn't an artillery cannon in IL-2.
The only objects that fire in an arc are the rocket launchers like Katyusha.
All kind of cannons fire direct to the target and if something is blocking, like a hill for example, it will not fire.
Added to this, the lack of range of the cannons in IL-2...

In HSFX they created an artillery cannon, but it is a rocket launcher with the 3D of a cannon.

In the stock IL-2 all kind of cannons have a range of 5km, but anti-tank cannons have a range of 1.5km.
Only the naval cannons have more range than 5km.
Sometimes they will not fire, even when in the range, because they don't fire in an arc, the terrain can block the target.
The cannons will only fire if they have visual contact to the target.

Not sure which version that was but I once used to FMB to build a "tower defense scenario" - and although terrain was blocking the line of sight, the cannons (or whatever, no rockets though) fired... pockmarked the hill but did not do anything else :P so, what I am saying is, they did try to shoot through terrain. Not very successful, but they did.

Mortars from CY6 fire in an arc.

By arc, I meant the side to side aiming, sorry for the mix up, but what Malone said about something similar to the target radius object, that may work....

An artistic rendering of a possible mod.____The photoshopped image was inspired by the Microsoft 360 game "Toy Soldiers" available for PC on Steam.
