utility for randomizing map objetcs
« on: May 18, 2013, 03:24:59 AM »

I'm wondering if someone may create a utility which can do the following to the map objects (actors.static or the equivalent text file inBuildings.txt)
Replace randomly object A with object A, B, C... with given probabilities.
Delete randomly object A with certain probability

Why this can be very useful?

1.Because it can remove town/village repetition! Map maker is creating usually some town and village templates and then using the autopop utility populates his map using these templates. It means that two villages or towns would look the same. However with this utility if used in a good way two towns would look differently at least to some extent...

 2. Possibility of tuning object density, good when you try to make maps run smoothly...Say you want to remove 20% of the one million trees you placed on a map  :)
Later some more maybe...

Anyone?

Thanks Boomer, I knew about this but I was thinking about a more user-friendly prog with drop-down menus to select objects etc. Also Zuti's doesn't have an option of percentage replacement, say, replace A with A in 25% cases, A with B in 50 % cases, A with C in the remaining 30 %. This percentage replacement/deletion can be very very useful...
In fact Flying Nutcase was working on such a application many years ago for randomizing EVERYTHING in missions, just the same and as I was one of the testers I can say it was a wonder.... :)

You still have this tool ?
I imagine, someone could modify it for what you want

or they could try and Modify Zuti's tool
as it can randomize objects one for another as you ask for,and has two filters for filtering out objects
Although it may prove difficult trying to filter out an actual percentages of certain Objects

Too bad Zuti is not into IL-2 anymore,as he could write apps like these in minutes
I have quite a few different batch file type utility's he has personally made for me, I'm sure he could have figure something out

Hopefully someone with this kind of knowledge finds this thread, could always do with more choices in map utility's   :)

I hope someone will take it?! Slowly, slowly... :)

You still have this tool ?

not sure if it would work, but if someone could look into the random object placer for battlefield vietnams editor....would be very similar....you choose how often, close, rotation the vegetation is done in specific textures....sounds like that could be useful here...

I see, it's a different game..
It can't be very difficult to write one anyway for il2.
I have something like this I  wrote in matlab but it's not user firendly and also most people don't have matlab...
I hope someone will take it. It's gonna be handy for mission builders too...

Re % replacement: - What if you wrote the name of 1 of the replacement objects multiple times in the screen of Zuti's program?

for instance: - You are replacing object #1 w object #2, #3 and #4.

But you want to replace on the following basis: -

Object #2 - 25%
Object #3 - 50%
Object #4 - 25%

What if you wrote Object #3's name twice in the dialogue box on Zuti's program? And the other objects once each only.

So you would have 4 objects written  - for 25% replacement each. But 1 object has its name written twice ( = 50%).
