Arado Ar 197
« on: May 20, 2013, 04:53:00 AM »

The last German biplane had sad fate. The RLM ordered its construction in 1937 as navy fighter for planned carrier Graf Zeppelin. But works on this ship but continued very slowly. Its completion within two years turned out to be as unrealistic. That is why the RLM ordered to stop work on the project Ar 197. One interesting at the end. The aircraft had the opportunity to shoot off landing gear for easier landing on the water.

Hmmm.... looks like a mix of Henschel Hs-123 and Arado Ar-196. Frankenplane perhaps- Hs-123 with Ar-196 tail assy, add Fokker D.VII interplane struts and Bob's your uncle!

This is a really cool looking plane. I like how it looks like a stretched out gladiator or something! I see the wing guns but where did they mount the cannon?

According to one of the sources, MG-FF cannons should be in the wings. Other Arados had machineguns above engine (similar as for example He 51). It would be so logical... :)
