Hi Guys,

This was the best tour of a museum I've ever had! The collection of aircraft there is both highly valuable and interesting with many rare warbirds such as the Fw-190A-6/R6 (modified to R8). These birds are well preserved and... how can I describe my feelings when seating in authentic Spitfire Mk VIII (high altitude version), Me-262, Fw-190 or Hawker Hartbee cockpits? I am still searching for the appropriate words... :P ;D 8) :-\

A couple of things I can tell though: even for a "big piece of meat" like me (200 pounds, 190 cm), no problem whatsoever to seat inside (without a flight suit and a parachute). Fw-190: bulges and nose guns are visible, and the bottom edge of the windshield is also visible, not as big and thick as vanilla IL-2's bar, for sure. And... so many other things: how beautiful the Mirage IIICZ from the Flying Cheetahs is... how kind the people are in the museum...  how big a plane the Buccaneer is... Unforgettable.

I will share pictures later ASAP.

Thank you so much to Piet and Wilmarli, you were wonderful hosts. Congratulations for the birth of the little girl Piet, and special congratulations for your ability to talk about so many detailed things about IL-2 and warbirds in front of your wife, without her losing patience... :-* You deserve a patent for that!

Because we are from SAS, and thus, we fucking ROCK, we had special permission to go behind the screens and climb into anything we wished.

What a great collection in that museum. I would love to see more pictures too.
I have never been to South Africa, even tho I was born close-by... in Lobito, Angola  ;)

It is just interesting to note the contribution of the Commonwealth countries in Britain's finest hour ;)

Many people have no interest in history; they don't know what they miss out in life:D

Actually, most of the time it's even better, George... ;D
And the wildlife can be quite something....we don't have lions walking the streets of Johannesburg, but here's some pics a mate of mine took here in the local harbour 2 weeks ago....

...watch where you swim.... :D

getting slightly back on topic, another SAAF fact or two:
Formed in 1912, approximately 3000 South Africans joined the RFC in 1914.
Beauchamp-Proctor, already mentioned by BiltongBru, was the leading SA ace with 54 victories, making him the fourth most successful ace for the British Empire.
Altogether 46 South Africans became aces during WW1.  ;)
