Not so sure about this : the SM.79 was considered as one of the best (if not the best) plane in its category !

I'm Italian and I agree with you, the Sparviero was a great plane and also the CR.32 and CR.42 in the early stages of the war did a good job.
I think that the whole Italian Army performed at the best of their possibilities in every theater in which was involved; but you know history is written by the winners

a lot of planes built that time, were great and made the job, they were disigned for, on it´s best.
a few of them has been years ahead, but time goes on...

...and instead of fighting, they are able to spend a lot of fun!
