Yeah, i was shocked the first time i saw it, like BI-6 1942, 1942!!!
When it's about to reach it's maximum speed it's nose tends to drop to insane levels and you get the red-out or the negative Gs (?) thingy, i never managed to pull it's nose up and resume "normal" flight hehe. As soon as you go past 80% in throttle the ramjets start to work and the whole thing shakes haha.
According to the IL-2 Airplane Guide .pdf , the BI-1 it's just like the Komet, intercept, make maximum two passes and glide back to base.
Advantages:
• High speed and excellent climb rate;
• Easy controls;
• Strong armor against bomber defensive fire.
Disadvantages:
• Insufficient maneuverability for horizontal fights against maneuverable fighters;
• Limited time of flight due to quick fuel consumption;
• Low ammo load.
On the BI-6
Advantages:
• Incredible climb rate;
• Small size makes for a difficult target;
• Easy to fly.
Disadvantages:
• Insufficient maneuverability for dogfights;
• Insufficient flight time;
• Short range.
• The wingtip ramjets have independent fuel source stored in the wings. They are effective at speeds above 320 km/h and have limited
throttle control. Ramjets offer better fuel economy than the rocket engine, and are used to achieve better range at cruise speed.
The main engine is to be used for take-off, acceleration, and maneuvering.
• Having the same basic airframe as the BI-1, the aircraft is prone to enter uncontrollable dives at speeds in excess of 800 km/h.
Now i get it, you're supposed to use the ramjets while the main engine is turned off, i was actually using all three engines at the same time lol
Unique aircraft indeed, i hope it gets more attention one day!
