(and can anyone tell me how to turn off the HDG in the lower left corner, done searches but could not find a how to, everything else on the hud is off ...thanks )

In game -> MISC -> TOGGLE SPEED BAR -> Apply
Assign a key command and during game play press that key 3 times to get rid of it.
