Please pardon the war story, but I had a very close shave while testing one of the single missions in edc1's new SCW pack. It's a scramble mission, with the player flying an I-16. The attacking, Condor Legion force included a flight of four He 51s in a loose trail formation. Each was carrying a drop tank and four bombs. I found myself climbing out directly through the middle of this flight, on a reciprocal course, and I saw the He 51 leader jettison his ordnance and drop tank:
My first thought was along the lines of: "Good, he's dropping well short of the home field." My next thought was: "So where's the wingman?" I expected He 51 #2 to be at more or less the same altitude as his flight leader. Little did I know that he was right in front of me....
The first thing I noticed in this instance was the drop tanks and bombs - headed straight for me. (It wasn't until I was organizing these screenies when I realized, with some embarrassment, that if I hadn't been gawking at his leader, I would have glimpsed the wingman rising directly through the center of my gunsight reticle. But then, at that point, I might not have been able to get off a shot fast enough.) Things were moving very quickly then; as I have a few times in the past, I actually ducked in my seat. LOL. If something like this had happened in real life, I probably would have dropped something, too: the fabled Deuce. After all, if the wingman had dropped his payload a split second earlier, the drop tank would have ended up in my lap - as they say.
Later, while reviewing the ntrk, I rotated the cockpit view straight up:
I also had a look, a second later, from this angle:
I wasn't quick enough to get a shot at the right instant from the starboard side of the aircraft, which is a shame; the drop tank sailed just past the vertical stabilizer at about the height of the upper rudder hinge.
