Role fighter
Nope.
Role: experimental plane, thermojet propulsion proof of concept.
Never planned to be armed or go into mass production, this plane was used to test the viability of a thermojet (a.k.a. motorjet) type of engine.
It's performance was way too low for it to be a viable fighting machine. Even with the deletion of the second cockpit, the added weight of the weapons would made it even worse.
Now this was supposed to be the real thing:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caproni_Campini_Ca.183bisWith the thermojet engine located in rear fuselage, and a conventional DB 605 driving a propeller in the nose, amd armed with 5 x MG151/20 cannons, this would be Italy's high altitude bomber killer.
It never got off the drawing board though.
This mixed power concept was used for a short time right after the war by both east and west (we have MiG I-250 in Il-2 already, and there was also Ryan FR-1 Fireball) but it was an evolutionary dead end - turbojets were the way to go.
Having said all this, i wouldn't mind if Caproni Campini N.1 would be made. The more the merrier.
