I would like to request the USS Mason.
« on: September 26, 2013, 07:20:45 PM »

We love flying and one group that stands out so much for thier struggles and triumphs is the Tuskegee Airmen who in thier service never lost one bomber to enemy aricraft. There was another little known mission of the same stature that I just became aware of. The USS Mason. DE 529. A US destoyer manned almost completely by african americans. They fought just as the Tuskegee group to overcome the times of the 1940's and had to wait until 1994 to recieve the accomodation they deserved in WWII.
I would like to request from one of our great ship builders here to remake and honor those men if they would make for us the USS Mason.
Information on the ship is limited online so I dont have blueprints and other items required of a propper request so I'll posts links to what I could find.

I know that this not enough information for a formal request but its all I could find.

I watched the movie dedicated to this ship and her crew. It may not be a great moive but the story was.

Interesting story i hadnt heard of it, thanks

though the 'Never lost a bomber' claim was a myth about the 332nd

Interesting read. Thank you. I had never read that. Tuskegee aside the men of the USS Mason no matter what their color fought proudly for their country and despite the norrow minded thinking of some people, they should have a place of honor as much as any who fought bravely on any side of the war no matter what country. I think it would be a fine addition to the IL2 fleet if someone would make the USS Mason for IL2.
These men spilled thier blood as many men did from all countries involved in WWII or any war. If we can honor others from other countries weather we believe in thier side or not. I feel it would be nice to honor these men as well.

The mason was a Destroyer Escort.
Unlike the Full Blown DDs of Fletcher Caliber (goddamn mini cruisers, if you ask me...)
destroyer Escorty were smaller, lighter Vessels.

Where the DDs were true Combat ships, kind of designed to meet and confront enemy Warships thus playing part in a Naval fleet, the DEs were meant as a Protection force for the slow Transports and Tankers, dropping ashcans on Subs and giving enemy Planes a hellraising welcome of Bofors and 20mm fire.

way back in the day (SHIII) i hated them. from my point of View, in my type IX/c submarine....
DE's stink like hell.
They got the communications between them, they are manoevrable, and have the electronics to track you down to a hundred meters below water surface.
very late a few of them had  a dozen Wasserbomben Throwers, able to waste you even if they didnt drop precisely over your head, or the Hedgehogs, with which a DE can have a go at you like using a shotgun.

They STINK from a U-boot point of View.

The allies would have fared much less good without these ships.

Because DE's are friggin Awesome little workhorses.
All the combat, but none of the Glory.
Glory is Overrated.

and this one manned by, like, "colored people" who had to fight - to be allowed to fight, all that background?
HELL YEA! Good idea!

+1!!

This is the Evarts Class (same as Mason) - click on the image for a larger view.
Hull shape and general details are similar to the Buckley class but with a shorter hull.
Full details of the Buckley Class including hull lines can be found in the Anatomy of the Ship Series "The Destroyer Escort England"
Profile Morskie also publishes some Buckley Class plans, USS Gendreau, in their "Destroyers of World War Two No1 "

Re the Evarts Class DE as per Wiki :

USS Mason (DE-529), an Evarts-class destroyer escort, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named Mason, though DE-529 was the only one specifically named for Ensign Newton Henry Mason.

As I feel it might better serve the sim , I  suggest an Evarts Class DE which could then be skinned by any who want to represent the USS Mason specifically(Or as an RN Captain CLass Frigate for that matter).

The Evarts class destroyer escorts were destroyer escorts launched in the United States in 1942–1944. They served in World War II as convoy escorts and anti-submarine warfare ships. They were also known as the GMT or "short hull" DE class, with GMT standing for General Motors Tandem Diesel drive.
The lead ship was USS Evarts (DE-5), launched on 7 December 1942. The first ship to be completed was commissioned on 20 January 1943 at the Boston Navy Yard; it was delivered to the Royal Navy under the Lend-Lease provisions and became HMS Bayntun. Evarts-class ships were driven by diesel-electric power with four diesel engines mounted in tandem with electric drives. The ships were prefabricated at various factories in the United States and the units brought together in the shipyards, where they were welded together on the slipways. The original design specified eight engines for 24 knots but other priority programs forced the use of only four with a consequent shortening of the hull.
In all, 105 Evarts-class ships were ordered with 8 later being cancelled. The United States Navy commissioned 65 while 32 Evarts-class ships were delivered to the Royal Navy. They were classed as frigates and named after captains of the Napoleonic Wars and formed part of the Captain class along with 46 ships of the Buckley class.

Anti aircraft Guns: 7 × Oerlikon 20 mm guns positioned one in front of the bridge behind and above B gun also one each side of B gun in pods and two each side of the ship in pods just abaft the funnel (some of the ships had an extra Oerlikon fitted on top of the superstructure midships, the odd ship had a twin Bofors 40 mm gun instead of the extra Oerlikon).
Hedgehog: British designed ahead throwing mortar which fired 24 bombs ahead of the ship, this was situated between A and B guns.
Depth Charges: Up to 160 depth charges were carried. Two sets of double rails at the stern held 24 per set. Two K gun throwers each holding five charges were situated each side of the ship just forward of the aft depth charge rails. Just forward of these, double ready rails extending to midships were fitted each side of the ship holding approximately sixty charges per side (these ready rails were added after the ships arrived back in the UK).
