Not sure what the designer of the zero would think.  I just finished reading his book about the designand development of the zero, and it was really interesting!

I'm pretty sure it was called "Mitsubishi's Eagles" by Jiro Horikoshi.  It's not the longest book but a good read.  It's originally in Japanese but an English translation is available.

Cool looking aircraft!  8)

The logical reason for a twin like this would be to carry heavier guns with more ammo...
I'm thinking 4x 20mm or even 4x 30mm, since standard Zeros already carried 2x20mm + 2-4 MG's and the A6M3-22 Kai had 2x30mm + 2xMG's, so this should have even heavier armament to take down bombers.

Perhaps also 2x external tanks or bombs inboard of the engines.
