I think you guys have highjacked this thread. The OP just wants to know if it can be turned off. Personally, if ricochets happened in real life and someone made the effect for the "sim", then leave it.

I agree, the best choice is to correct the armor of the floor.

Me thinks you greatly underestimate the power of the Ma Deuce.
1 inch of armor plate it's nothing took the .50, might as well be an inch of lace as steel.
.50 AP will only penetrate 1" armor plating when fired from less than 200m and with a 90 degree angle of impact. .50 ball rounds will not penetrate 1" armor at any range or angle.

1" armor even slightly angled (20-30 degrees) will defeat .50 AP at any range, let alone when the round has lost energy ricocheting off the ground.

Okay, so are we talking regular ball ammo or armor piercing? Documentation to back up claims please.

http://www.inetres.com/gp/military/infantry/mg/50_ammo.html

1" = 25.4mm for reference

Any modern pictures of people shooting .50cal rounds at steel plates and appearing to get better results will be against mild steel. Mild steel is approx 50% as effective for the same thickness as face hardened armor and 55% as effective as rolled homogeneous armor (RHA).

The ricochet mod running in my 4.08 is certainly not just a visual effect. The bounced bullets continue downrange, and if they have not exceded their live time will impact ground, water and objects with visible effect. I have deliberately hit the ground immediately in front of such things as train cars, the ricochets alone destroying them.

its not just visual for sure... even in 4.12 flying really low... fire a burst and one or two puffs appear at a secondary impact point further downrange.. I always thought it a very nice effect.

I've read an account of P-47 pilots who learned to kill Tigers by that very routine. Since there is no armor on the tanks belly, the pilots would sometime come from behind, and fire at the gap between the tank and the ground. Ricochets would often do enough damage to put the tank out of action. I do not recall where I read this. I used to subscribe to WWII Magazine, so maybe there?
I read one article about P-47 pilots destroying tanks with this method, but they were British pilots at the CBI theatre and they scored some Japanes tanks, not German heavy tanks.
