Caproni Ca.314
« on: December 10, 2013, 08:36:42 PM »

Since the Caproni Ca.309/310 Light Bomber is now in SAS would it be possible to get a conversion to the Ca.314.   The Caproni Ca.314 was an Italian monoplane, twin-engine bomber aircraft used in World War II.  Derived from the similar Ca.310, it was used for ground attack and torpedo bomber duties. It was the most extensively built Ca.310 derivative, and included bomber, convoy escort/maritime patrol, torpedo bomber, and ground-attack versions.  Despite the improvements such as more powerful engines, heavier armament, etc. it was still very vulnerable to Allied fighter aircraft and had a relatively light bomb load.

The original request for the Ca310 can be found at:
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=25770.0

Similar data for the Ca.314 is given below:

First the specification from Wikipedia

General characteristics

    Crew: 3
    Length: 11.80 m (38.7 ft)
    Wingspan: 16.65 m (54.63 ft)
    Height: 3.70 m (12.1 ft)
Wing area: 39.2 m² (421.9 ft²)
Empty weight: 4,560 kg (10,053 lb)
Loaded weight: 6,620 kg (14,595 lb)
    Powerplant: 2 × Isotta-Fraschini Delta R.C.25 I-DS, 540 kW (724 hp) each

Performance

    Maximum speed: 395 km/h (245 mph)
    Range: 1,690 km (1,050 mi)
    Service ceiling: 6,400 m (20,997 ft)

Armament

Guns: 2 × 12.7 mm (0.5 in) (in wing roots), 1 × 7.7 mm (.303 in) (in dorsal turret) Breda SAFAT machine guns
Bombs: Up to 500 kg (1,102 lb)

Great idea :) The most of Italian aircraft is still missing...

Wow, quite a beauty there! It almost looks as they designed it with no war in mind, to cute to be fearsome, lol! +1

Initially I was looking at this too simply, but when I looked at the changes required to change the Ca.310 to a Ca.314 it looks much more complicated than I first thought. What is required includes atleast:

-1. A change of engines from the “Piaggio P.VIII C.35, 350 kW (470 hp)” to the “Isotta-Fraschini Delta R.C.25 I-DS, 540 kW (724 hp)”. This would require a new 3D modeling for these engines and maybe the propellers.
-2. The gun armament would need to be upgraded from the
--- a. 3 × 7.7 mm (0.303 inch) Breda SAFAT machine guns (2 × 7.7 mm/0.303 inch machine guns fixed forward firing mounted in the wing roots; 1 × 7.7 mm/0.303 in machine gun in a dorsal turret) to …
--- b. 2 x 12.7 (.50 inch) Breda SAFAT machine guns fixed forward firing mounted in the wing roots; 1 × 7.7 mm (0.303 inch) machine gun in a dorsal turret and another in a ventral gun position firing aft … one or both of these two movable 7.7 mm machine guns are shown as 12.7 mm in some publications (this was probably an upgrade as production progressed).
--- c. Additional 3D work would be necessary to show ventral gun position.
-3. Increased bomb load options to allow for the increased bomb load capacity from 450 kg to 500 kg and for the addition of a torpedo (Maybe could use the torpedo from the SM.79).
-4. The nose of the Ca.314 is shorter and blunter than the one on the Ca.310 … so again some 3D work would be necessary.
-5. Both the wing spans and the wing areas of the Ca.314 were only 1-3% larger than the Ca.310 so I would believe that no changes are necessary.
-6. A new FM that would take the major changes into account;
--- a. Increased top speed … from 365 km/h (227 mph) to 395 km/h (245 mph)
--- b. Increased empty weight from 3,040 kg (6,702 lb) to 4,560 kg (10,053 lb)
--- c. Increased loaded weight from 4,650 kg (10,251 lb) to 6,620 kg (14,595 lb)
--- d. Increased power from 2 x 350 kW (470 hp) to 2 x 540 kW (724 hp) … please note that the power to weight ratios are slightly improved for the Ca.314 over the Ca.310
--- e. The stall speed for the Ca.314 was probably higher than the Ca.310 since the airplane is heavier and the wing platform remained essentially unchanged … this would mean the takeoff, landing, and stall speeds would need to be increased for the Ca.314 … (The lower service ceiling for the Ca.314, 6,400 m (20,997 ft) vs. 7,000 m (22,966 ft) for the Ca.310, would seem to confirm this fact.)

Therefore what I initially perceived as a simple modification to an existing aircraft, after analysis of the changes required, has proven to be a much more difficult and time consuming task than I originally imagined. There is a substantial amount of 3D work involved.

I have probably missed a lot of items an experienced modder would need to address so no wonder there a very few mods that are really simple. This exercise increases my admiration for what the modders of IL2 have accomplished.

Thank You All!! … tooslow

It'd be nice to see one of these in the game.
