Random landing gear staggering?
« on: December 22, 2013, 08:35:32 PM »

This little detail has irked me from the beginning, and i cant help but feel like the same can be said for others as well. Il2 has always had a distinct order to how landing gear extend. Always the same way. However, in Lockon Flaming Cliffs 2 the SU-25 at least had a randomized order to the landing gear retraction and extension, and i know there are randomized codes for tracers and other things in 1946, so maybe someone could make a code in il2 to duplicate a random gear staggering effect. Not super important, just a little extra icing on the cake.

hmm...not 100% sure what you're referring to, mate....
i would think that the gear extends the same way for each plane, in reality? surely, the gear does not open and close in a random way?
well, that is, if i understand you correctly? which i'm not sure i do... :o

let's try and clarify...
are you talking about, e'g: for plane X, left wheel gear closes before right wheel, front wheel closes last.
and vice versa when opening?
surely, this sequence would be the same everytime, and not randomised?
it sounds more to me like Lockon has it wrong......
again, if i am not misunderstanding you... :P

Yeah, sorry, was pretty tired when i wrote that :-X
What i meant was whenever you watch videos of landing gear retracting or extending, the never reach the same point at the same time. The Zero in game for example, the left gear always extends first, but it always starts that way. Maybe a code to randomly select which gear extends first? Or one that sets a staggering effect for each gear as it comes down or goes up. I will see if i can find a good video showing it.

i still don't get it.
if we are referring to the same thing, then i would stick by my previous point, and that is this would not work in such a random way in reality.
please, yes, post a video of what you mean.. ;)

Basically, he's asking that the gears retract not at the same time, but with a short delay on one gear so one retracts a second later before the other does, not that they are both exactly retracted at the same time unlike real aircrafts. Are you serious you really didn't get it? I hope this helped you understand though. :3

But whenever they talked about him, they always had a slight smile on their faces.. And that, perhaps, maybe your answer.

Something like this. Watch the main landing gear, each time they retract they finish at slightly different times.

Well, as an 18 year acft mechanic, I can categorically say that landing gear NEVER EVER are to retract randomly. They are sequenced to retract in a particular order from the drawing room up. If a planes landing gear retracts randomly, the ground crew will be very upset because the plane is now operating in a manner in which it was not designed. as for the Zero, or other acft for that matter where one gear retracts earlier than the other is because the hydraulic systems in the early fighters were not as strong as today. They had check valves, sequencing valves and switches that allowed hydraulic fluid to go to one gear first then to another as the first one passed a certain point in the retraction process. This process still happens today but in a much less dramatic way.

US_GRANT- i know that they are supposed to come up in a certain order, its just that they hardly ever seem to be perfectly in synch. There is always just a small gap between them, even in modern aircraft.

... a very interesting He 162 sequence here:

Other than that for the Bf109 for ex, the left gear generally always retracts first ...

Its almost like they cant decide if they want to open or not. Also was surprised by the fact that the nose wheel leg extended that far on the opposing side to the wheel. I always thought the leg stopped at the pivot.
