FM-1 / FM-2 Wildcats
« on: January 25, 2014, 10:59:58 AM »

The proposed pack contains replica of old well-known mods of last planes of Grumman Wildcat family - FM-1 and FM-2. Their fighting career has been a strong and successful.  FM-1 / FM-2 Wildcats attacked the German submarines in the Atlantic, they participated in amphibious operations in the Mediterranean, Normandy, Okinawa and others. Tasked with supporting ground forces off Leyte, sorely under-armed aircraft from escort carriers task groups found themselves up against a major surface fleet in the Battle off Samar.

The Royal Navy received 312 FM-1 and 340 FM-2 under the Lend-Lease. Named as Martlet Mk.V and Martlet Mk.VI (Wildcat V and Wildcat VI since January 1944) they were extensively used at sea, primarily based on escort carriers though some were also carried aboard fleet carriers.

FM-1 and FM-2 succesfully participated in aerial combats. FM-2 Wildcats shot down a number of kamikaze aircraft in the Pacific. Acting from British carriers Searcher and Pursuer (both-Bogue class) off Norwegian coast in 1945 they met in combat with Luftwaffe aircraft. On March 26, 1945 Wildcats VI from the Pursuer shot down five Bf-109.

This pack is based on old FM-1 and FM-2 mods. It started when Griffon_301 extracted FM-2 mod from UP2.01, added some 3D Jero's fixes and shared it. I used FM-1 mod based on Beowulff's one but with revised default skins and weapons list in basic classfile. The planes were united, new default skins were prepared for them based on RONNCO's and weapons list in basic classfile for FM-2_GM was edited like the one for FM-1_GM. MissionBug created and added Self Stationary planes. SAS~Bravo tested it and added Jeronimo's 3D Fixes to FM-1_GM and FM-2_GM.

SAS Admins kindly allowed us to use SAS name for this pack and now we have honour to propose it for the community.

great stuff guys and well done!!!

btw, according to an article in the last issue of Flight Journal (written by Barrett Tillman), the FM-2 ranks as the best US fighter of World War 2 with regard to kill/loss ratio and it produced several aces during combat in WW2;
also, forming hunter-killer teams with TBMs in the Atlantic, they were responsible for a number of UBoats sunk...

really a great bird with a lot of combat history.....
