Strange cyclic graphic issue
« on: February 01, 2014, 10:28:39 AM »

Hi all,

First, I had that issue : the colors on the wing are "bad" (sorry my english is too poor to define it better, see the pic)

Then, suddenly, without even knowing what I did, the problem was gone ! (see the pic of a preceeding post )

Then again, still without knowing the reason, I reverted to the first case...

Any hints on what is wrong will be greatly welcome as this problem is driving me mad...

Thanks in advance, regards

EDIT : everything else is fine, the problem is just with the plane (inner and outer views) and some cockpit parts

Thanks for the reply, and yes all the aircraft are affected (or it seems so because I don't know much about their before/after state). What is sure is that all the Bf109 are messed up (the pics are from a B). I don't know if it's related but I wonder if the game itself is affected with "blocky" texture on some menu (visible shades of grey like if colors weren't "blending"). Thanks again to bother about my problem.

Regards

Such 'posterization' can result from a decrease in bit depth on color. Strange if it comes and goes when not actually making changes yourself to the game's or computer's settings.

Hi and thanks for the reply.

I've checked the color depth settings and they seem ok. Here are two parts of my conf.ini

Code: [Select]
[window]
width=1280
height=1024
ColourBits=32
DepthBits=24
StencilBits=8
ChangeScreenRes=1
FullScreen=1
DrawIfNotFocused=0
EnableResize=0
EnableClose=1
SaveAspect=0
Use3Renders=0

Code: [Select]
[Render_OpenGL]
TexQual=3
TexMipFilter=3
TexCompress=1
TexFlags.UseDither=0
TexFlags.UseAlpha=0
TexFlags.UseIndex=0
TexFlags.PolygonStipple=0
TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0
TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=0
TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=1
TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0
TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1
TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1
TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=1
TexFlags.ClipHintExt=1
TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0
TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1
TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=0

TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=1
TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1
TexFlags.DepthClampNV=1
TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1
TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=1

HardwareShaders=1

Shadows=2
Specular=2
SpecularLight=2
DiffuseLight=2
DynamicalLights=1
MeshDetail=2
VisibilityDistance=3

Sky=2
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2

LandGeom=3
TexLarge=1
TexLandQual=3
TexLandLarge=1

VideoSetupId=17
Water=3
Effects=1
ForceShaders1x=0
PolygonOffsetFactor=-0.15
PolygonOffsetUnits=-3.0

I really don't know what's going on, it seems that grey shades are more affected with heavy color banding. And again, it's only noticeable on the plane, inside the cockpit (sky and water are fine for exemple) and maybe on some game windows (pic)

in the config tool, the texture compression checkbox...
compressing textures makes them ugly.

Thanks for the advice, I did several experiments:

With no texture compression the problem is gone but my GPU commits suicide (colored dots everywhere and missing/distorded textures, unplayable)

More weird, with S3TC compression the result is better than with the 16bit one, should'nt it be worse?

Moreover, at some time it worked with the settings I gave above, I really don't understand what is going on...

My GPU is a Nvidia 9800GT, maybe it's time to spend some money right ?

i would recommend saving up for a new graphics card, mate
that one you have isn't bad, but it is also quite old by now, and it sounds like an overheating problem, especially under certain settings.
this is definitely not a mod-related problem, but hardware.
i've never seen anything like what you described happen due to any mod before.

It's not running that hot (around 40°C), maybe a memory issue, for sure a hardware one (when I look to the specs of some people around here mine are kind of  rickety). Whatever, I'm starting the savings today. I was considering quitting smoking so...(or rather drinking, or even eating, still wondering).

Thanks to all that bothered to follow me on that wild-goose chase...
