Choice of Plane on Mission Start
« on: February 02, 2014, 06:08:12 PM »

Hello IL-2 community, I am new.

I have been trying to create a mission in which the player can choose from multiple planes at the start of the mission. Is this possible?

In experimenting, I created a Home Base object with specific planes to choose from, but I could not start the mission that way. I added an Aircraft object to the Home Base, and checked the box that made it a Player, but I could not find a way to have this Aircraft object be a range of aircraft.

In online games, it's easy to choose the player's Home Base, and then choose from the range of available aircraft from the Arming screen. How is this done in a single player mission?

Cordially,
Zack

Hello. Welcome to the SAS and IL2. :) Are you meaning you want to have this for "single" missions or "Quick" missions?  We have some really great mission builders here so you should get an answer to your question.

Hi, thanks for the greeting.

I had Single Mission in mind. For example, let's say the player will launch from an airfield to intercept bombers. But the player has a small choice of aircraft models to use for this task, like being able to choose between a Spitfire and a Hurricane, or a Bf-110 and a Bf-109.

Normally, I only saw missions which featured a single aircraft model. But when I played a few matches online, I saw that there was a range of aircraft to choose from (after the player selects the Home Base to launch from). Because online matches are just Single Missions tailored for team play, I was wondering if this were possible for offline play.

Thank you,
Zack

Yes, you need an MDS mission (Moving Dogfight Server). This is basically a Dogfight Mission (you place Home Base as
you said with planes of your choice) that have also AI only planes as per a single player mission (don't check "player"
for the AI's).

Now, for playing the mission Offline, you go the same way as if you were going to host it for an online session :

GAME MENU -> Multiplayer -> Create server (choose Dogfight) & then browse to find your mission & fly

You have to place the mission inside a DOGFIGHTS Folder

Hi BT~Walker,

I see. It works now. The multi-plane Single Mission is created in the guise of an online dogfight, but it's really just single-player.

Because it has to run as an online dogfight, is there a way to disable respawning, to make it seem more like a normal Single Mission? Moreover, can online dogfight missions be set so that "MISSION COMPLETE" or "MISSION FAILED" also appears? Is there a tally when the player Quits like with Single Mission?

Thank you,
Zack

No. And I don't get the purpose for such thing to do. If you want to fly in same Flight with different plane than Flight has, there is no way.
If I get it right, what you may want is this : Place a generic stationary plane in Home Base for you to spawn at this position. Make a flight
(or flights) to taxi for take off & then join them with whatever plane you want. But in Dogfight (MDS), player cannot be assigned in any AI
Flight. Only in single or cooperative missions.

Yes. If you place Target objects as in Single missions, you get "Primary target complete" etc & if you accomplish all primary targets
in timer's duration (if set for accomplishing targets), you get "Red Won" or "Blue Won".

What is great about MDS missions is, that you can have AI planes, ships or vehicles spawn at different times during the ongoing mission, fighting each other &
flying for different type of sorties (eg. Bombing, escort, cap, air superiority, dropping parachuters etc), which can last for hours (until one
of the 2 sides accomplishes their targets), while player (or players online) RESPAWN/REFLY after each sortie they make, to assist the AI's for mission
accomplishment of their side. This gives the feel of an ongoing battle, dynamically affected of player's actions. This is what MDS missions it's about.
Though UP3 is the best at this type of missions, in DBW, SAS Modact or HSFX, you may have the same result, though with less capabilities
(like rearm/refuel & moving frontlines with capture of AirBases that don't exist outside UP3).

Thank you for your answer. The UltraPack Moving Dogfight Server epic sounds very fun.

While I am here, I might as well ask another question, about Dynamic Campaigns. Is it possible to design a Dynamic Campaign in which the player flies different aircraft from time to time?

Zack
