Smoothing issue using msh converter 1.18 and Gmax - SOLVED
« on: February 15, 2014, 02:29:27 PM »

Hi all,

As stated above, I have smoothing issues and I would like to know where it comes from and if there is a solution. I'm a raw beginner, I've read some topics related to this but it didn't helped.

Basically, I convert meshes into 3ds with msh converter then I modify them in Gmax and finally I export them to .msh files again with the "boogy woogy" exporter. Once in the game the files appear BUT the smoothing is gone (or partially gone, sometimes it's just some part that are affected). EDIT : I should consider stopping the abuse of beer, I think all the smoothing is lost on import I've tried to smooth those files manually but it doesn't export. EDIT : in fact, it exports, the problem is elsewhere, see post below

I've read that the buggy buggy could be in cause, so my first question is : can I obtain something with the softwares I use (ie msh converter / Gmax) ?

If yes, the problem is then the misuse of them, in that case can someone give me some clues ?

Thanks in advance.

hi,

I have read that converting into 3ds loose the smoothing groups. Ok, so I've tried to smooth the converted mesh but for an unknown reason, some parts won't smooth (auto smoothing or assigning smoothing group manually give the same result). I'm a complete beginner regarding the use of Gmax so maybe I'm missing something. Can anyone help ?

Here is an exemple : on the first pic the mesh is shown just after being imported, the smoothing is gone

on the second pic I smoothed it but only the rod in the middle is affected, the two others (identical, same orientation) are not !

Well, I've found the answer... (to be more precise I understood it at last because I've already read it in another topic...)

For some reasons, the vertices unweld when converted into 3ds, all I had to do is welding them again (a threshold of 0.001 gave good results) before smoothing. That's it.
