Easy to make 2048x2048 textures.
« on: February 24, 2014, 12:05:09 PM »

It is rather time consuming to create high resolution textures with the size 2048x2048.
First finding images on Google Earth, Flash Earth or where ever those satellite images are hidden on the internet.
Then stitching useful parts together, making the image seamless and see how it works out in game.
And then the whole procedure starts again for texture #2.

First of all it is not necessary to make every texture high rez, a few ones enlivens the map already.
For those that are familiar with creating 512x512 or 1024x1024 textures here are some alternative ideas to create high rez textures.

The only thing you need to have has already been said by the great philosopher SpongeBob:

                      free image hosting

And what does that mean practically?

To get the above textures in game I used a high rez photo with size 3888x2592 (see below) of soil with tracks and scaled it to 2048x2048.
After making it seamless, desaturating and changing Contrast/Brightness + adding a BumpH file it is done.

image hosting above 5 mb

Another example is by using an image of a floor carpet:

image upload with preview

Same procedure (making it seamless, desaturating and changing Contrast/Brightness + adding a BumpH file) and in game you get this result:

If even thát is too much work take one of Carsmaster's high rez textures like this one:

screen cap

And after some desaturating and changing Contrast/Brightness it looks like this:

These internet images works great not only for making snow textures but also for desert and rocky textures.
In case you can not find a decent image on the internet make some close ups of your wall, floor, leaves, anything.

By the way, here is an interesting site which offers high rez textures. For free.
You only need to subscribe.

There is more than just Google Earth/Bing Maps or Flash Earth.  ;)

Great info, thanks Uufflakke. I'm itching to put some 2048 textures together to refresh some 'older' maps

Best regards,

Martin

Thanx for this Uufflakke. Wonderful stuff to see and know how it happens, realy cool! I remember when doing the FBDSM (default skin mod) often a snow camo was started off by taking a good regular skin and desaturating selected colors. I forget sometimes that the best tricks are the simple ones. And, love the carpet! Also, I love how you make it sound simple to make the textures seamless ;D I know from experience that is the part that always defeated me :) Thanx for sharing!

Making textures seamless ís simple with GIMP.
I've seen a couple of methods over the years and people recommending special software for that but not necessary.
In GIMP go to: LAYER -> TRANSFORM -> OFFSET.
And set the X, Y values at about 30%. Or whatever value you like.
Last step is to remove the edges with the clone stamp.

Gimp also has a function to make an image seamless in one step: FILTERS -> MAP -> MAKE SEAMLESS.
The disadvantage of this function is that it blurs the image way too much. Better not use it for creating textures.

Actually I've never thought of it before:  making use of the desaturation option and combining it with its original texture to create snow textures. And then to know I've tried many things in the past to create snow textures. Which were all disappointing.
I got the 'Aha-Erlebnis' while experimenting with textures.
Besides using the grey scale and dropping the whole texture on top of the original one and applying the transparency slider the colour picker tool is another option.
Select a certain grey value and copy-paste the layer on to the original ground texture.
By changing the reach of grey values you get different results. From heavy - Russian style- snowfall to early -Western European style- snowfall.

It is a small step from wrinkled wallpaper to snowdrifts.
