Hello Simon!

I knew why I spared my first post here in the new year for something special :)
let me be the first to say WOW after getting that manual :)
that is a work of art - all those screenies make me want to fly a little more IL2 again, as recently WOFF took away most of my limited flying time;
I am looking forward to getting my hands on CFM, that looks really pretty comprehensive and should be the best reason to retire my heavily modded newTFM/4.10 install;
just one question though, I have to admit I just flew over what is included in CFM - will the USN Light Carriers be in CFM as well? I did mostly carrier flying before I switched to WOFF in autumn so I want to start again where I left back then :)

cheers and a heartfelt big THANK YOU to you and your Hangar19 team for all your work :)
phil
Hi Phil, that's affirmative, Plowshare's beautiful Light Carriers are part of TFM-412 and those and much more have scrunched down into CFM.  It is all described in 27 pages of which 12 pages are credits.  As a big enthusiast of Naval Aviation the carriers have long held my particular interest and I became an avid fanatic of such work years ago.

Many additional ships complete the FMB picture and functionality; thanks to the modelling talents of: Archie, Asheshouse, Diving_Hawk, Flakiten, gio963tto, Plowshare, JFC, Sani, Ten101 and western0221.

WOFF is interesting too; Because I never saw anything to touch VPMedia team's DBW1916 and thoroughly enjoyed doing a number of campaigns in that era.  Once CFM is established I would very much like to see how the latest DBW1916 plays in my 412 install and get back up to date, as it were, with the Il2 based WWI sim.  What I really enjoy about DBW1916, and SCW and CFM, is familiarity with the controls and the FMB tools.  However; with heavily modded installs and growing collections of aircraft across several eras; version 412 was quite a jump, in fact a quantum leap, for a number of significant reasons:

The Problems:
1) New-TFM in 410 was starting to hit the Java Wall.  Too many aircraft and mods made the sim unstable and it began to do things I had never seen in Il2: - CTD's, lockups, slideshows, memory errors, mostly due to the out of date Java code and a game engine starting to show its age.

2) FMB Functions;  FMB in 412 gives us a flightsim.  Ie: Taxi to takeoff, parking and spawning assignments, formation control, skinnable statics.  It is light years ahead of 410 FMB.

The Solutions:
1) Flying a modded 412 setup: no more Java Wall!  This alone is worth its weight in gold!  No more CTDs, slide shows, etc, bottom line, no more limitations.  It feels like it can take a lot more, the stabilty is superb and performance is much improved over 409 and 410.  That's right; performance in 412 is better, you will get more out of it, handle more planes in the air at one time, enjoy bigger dogfights etc.

2) FMB 412 Missions now comprise elements you would expect when flight-planning in FSX or DCS, which I also like to do.  412 feels contemporary and flexible enough to handle anything.  Beside it 410 is limited, stuck with default static skins, stuck with runway starts every time, stuck with the bloody Java wall and a whole bunch of limitations.

Yes, it is a pain in the arse to retro-patch missions, rebuild mods and planelists, redo your maps and campaigns etal...  But with 412 you are getting WAY MORE gains over losses and even the losses are temporary.  Look how quickly the 412 content has caught up to what we had in 410!

When people see that you can Supermod 412 in 10 Minutes, they will NOT want to go backwards.  I guarantee, you can take that to the bank...

The only pain is that we will soon have the 4.13 patch... sorry to say that, Monty ! And I hope you will not take it bad, because it is absolutely not against you and your superb work !

No pain Gaston, I'm playing CFM now and 412 content is superb.  Nothing will alter the fact that 412 is so much better than 410.  Several interesting questions arise with 413. - Will it be better integrated on top of 412?  Will it be easier to upgrade from 412 to 413?

I think Yes, there will be less patching from 412 to 413, unless I'm wrong and the whole Java Code is re-written again.  In which case lets look at the gains and assess what we have.  Right now 412 absolutely rocks and I don't have 413 so I play with what I have.

Once the wonderful modders converted so much content from 409/410 to 412 it was not that hard to get back up to date.  When realistically can we expect to have the 413 patch and then fully evaluate it and asses its impact on our mods?  Not this month for sure.  Not for some time I predict.

I'm playing CFM now, in the present.

If and when the day comes we have 413 and its even better than 412 and we need to upgrade again I will be ready.  If it turns out to be a bag of spanners then we already have the definitive set here.  But it won't be happening immediately. ;D

Just read the manual and I agree with Phil - fantastic work and congratulations to all involved in the project. When I first purchased the original IL2 Sturmovik back in 2001 (from memory) I never thought that the game would evolve into what it has become today - it just keeps on getting better! To me the guts of the game are the campaigns, and I cant wait to get stuck into some CFM compatible versions. The next game changer would be CFM compatible DGEN and DCG - a difficult task I know.

Anyway, cheers Monty, and I hope you are not affected by the current bushfires around Adelaide. (I was in Adelaide for a conference at the National Wine Centre and Waite Arboretum last October - can't remember much of the conference! - and really enjoyed my stay. Shame about those summer heatwaves though!)

Hello mate, I think the worst is over.  We are actually quite close to the Sampson Flats and One Tree Hill, due north of Adelaide city.  For several days the smoke has been very intense as the huge bushfire rages out of control.  Over 80 Fire Appliances and 20 aircraft have been working the area for a week now.  We have our truck fuelled and loaded ready to go.  It all depends on the wind.  We are due west of the immediate firezone and westerly winds protect us.  A shift to easterly or south easterly may mean scarper time!

A week into it containment will get easier as the fuel over 20,000 hectares is burned up.  Its huge, the smoke cloud is incredible; at the local shops yesterday we couldn't see the other end of the street!  But people carry on as normal.  About 30 homes have been destroyed, no human fatalities, we have been very lucky.  The Aussie spirit is incredible, a small national population, despite the vast size of the country, always pulls together and we help each other out.

It has been difficult to relax and hard to sleep, but all in all my wife and family have enjoyed one of the best Christmas's ever in our new home with so many new friends in a beautiful part of South Australia.  Bushfires are part of a natural process and the land and people will quickly recover.

Next time you are over on a conference let us know.  I will get the spare room ready and pick you up at the airport.

That's good news mate - large bushfires are terrible events, and it can be very arbitrary what gets destroyed and what escapes. Here in Sydney we sometimes get blanketed by huge smoke clouds from fires in the Blue Mountains, and it can feel very oppressive and ominous.

You're right about the spirit and camaraderie that that emerges in these situations. I was in the Dandenongs Ranges during the Ash Wednesday fires in 1983, surrounded by fires and didn't think I would see the dawn. The roar of the fires is an incredibly frightening experience that is hard to forget, but paradoxically you also get a bit of an adrenaline rush also - probably the bodies biochemistry switching into survival mode! Anyway, the community spirit as everyone pulled together and looked out for each other was wonderful to experience, and it makes you wonder why it takes a disaster event to break down barriers.

And thanks for the offer, I might take you up on it next time I am in town.

Cheers

SAS~Monty27, We hope you and yours stay safe from the fire.

A question: Will there be a place to obtain the 19 SFS files from Ultrapack for anyone who has not got them, maybe people who have not modded for whatever reasons?

Monty,

Just a general question. Having read the manual, am I correct in understanding that TotalModder will be packaged with CFM? I will probably keep my TFM412 + Mods as a standalone backup until I get comfortable with using TotalModder in a clean CFM install. I don't want to waste time setting up a profile now and have to do it over again when CFM is released.

Thanks and Regards, DDM

The ideal would be to have a "all-in-one" download, including everything necessary without having to pick this here, that there, etc, and just have to install it on a clean 4.12 install ! Personnally, I found the TotalModder to complicated, especially because I do not understand everything (english is not my language).

I have to tead the manual, by curiosity...

Gaston, From the manual:

CFM STANDALONE INSTALL
Whether or not you use TotalMODder - CFM is also an effective Standalone Install; based on top of
SAS Modact 5.3+. For those who don't yet fully understand TotalMODder, or want to quickly install
CFM Standalone, with all the benefits of improved file compression, simply download and install direct.

The total modder is easy once you grab the gists of it. That is after a few goofs no big deal.
Gaston
Why do not you after dl the handbook use a translater to convert to what ever language you read and write. There is quite a few programs out there that does a great job and is free. One I do say get is IM does a great job.
yes English is quite confusing depending on what version you are listening to. One is the Queens english or the American slang version take your pick.

I have just installed a clean 4.12.2 and the SAS Modact 5.3+. That's all so far, right?
