DCG The Somme 1917-18 V1.1 DBW1916
« on: May 02, 2014, 05:51:38 PM »

The campaigns have no historical claim but I think its a nice playground for current and future aircraft of DBW 1916! Good for testing things under campaign conditions and maybe a bit Red Baron feeling!

Recommended DCG settings:

   Active Front "ON"
   Air Starts "On"
   No Transfers "On"
   Massed Bombers "Off"
   Column Density "Full"
   Squadron Density "Full"
   Max. Flights/Squadron = 1
   Action Radius = 50km - 100km

One note: The Brandenburg CI 329 has long payload entries, a few too long for DCG!
So be careful when you change payload settings for this aircraft in DCG! Otherwise it can explode in the following mission!
If you still have exploding aircraft at mission start, please post here!
And you need the latest DBW1916 patch for this campaign!

Many thanks to Paul Lowengrin for his support and Dynamic Campaign Generator,
all modders who were involved in the creation of DBW/DBW1916 and finally the whole IL-2 modder community!

And the first update!
Missing payload of the AlbatrosDVa for an intercept mission caused exploding aircraft at mission start!
Have "Extra Ammunition" for safety also set for ground attack missions! The same for the Schuckert DI!

Changes V1.1:
1.Reworked fobjects.dcg for new artillery!
2.Reworked both .rds files, at some points artillery of each fraction were too close together during combat!
3.Fixed a write bug of the columns in the timetable and renamed the remaining columns from the .mis files
4.Added two more fighter squads for the german side for each campaign!

To have more different targets for missions play a bit with the action radius settings!

Whats new to me in DCG is, that you can change the map also during the campaign and not only for the campaign start!
You dont have to edit each time the new created .mis file! (Thanks, Deichläufer!)
I have changed the campaigns currently to the winter map, but if you want to have the summer map of the Somme,
open the maps.dcg of this 3rd party campaign folder and change the old line to this:

Load= WWI_Somme/WWI_load2.ini

The map will change from the next new created mission!
Should give no problems, as long as no major differents were made between the maps!

Hi

Thank you for this campaign!

I've tried a few missions now, starting in 1917 flying the Albatros DIII, but I'm new to DBW 1916 and I've never used DCG before. I started with the suggested DCG settings, but turned down the Squadron Density one notch and  also the Action Radius where I tried 30km-50km.

Initial observations:
I were never even close to the mission objectives in any of the missions since our flight usually was attacked rather early in the mission, usually deadly head-on attacks from above. I had also problems keeping up with my flight, they gained altitude more quickly than I could. My flight mates were often shot down quickly and in one mission when we reached the enemy side of the frontline all three were shot down by enemy ground fire in a few seconds.

Is there anything to change in DCG to improve things?

Cheers

Hi,
To reduce the AAA in the missions, open "General Campaign settings" in DCG and change "Stationary Object Density" to a lower level!
You can not change the behavior of the planes in dogfight but the skill of the squads in the "Squadron Editor" under "Skill"!
Here you can also reduce the number of the Squads in the campaign:
Choose a Squadron and press the "red cross in the circle", it will then removed from the current campaign!
When you start later a new campaign all deleted Squads are included again!
To change the Transit speed of the planes, open "Aircraft Class settings" panel! There you can change speed, alt a.s.o.!
(I have the impression, that the Albatros DIII is underpowered in DBW1916, but i am no expert in such things, just a feeling!)
Also play with the "Action radius settings", maybe above 50Km!

Hope it helps!

Thanks for your tips!
There are certainly a lot of things to change in DCG and as a newbie it's not easy to understand what the different settings actually change in the campaign even if I study the DCG information available....
I'm new to DBW 1916 also and was a bit confused about how to control the DIII engine. I've read about some planes use the magnetos to control the rpm, but I'm not sure if that applies to the Alb....
I share your opinion about the Albatros DIII, but as you write it's just a feeling and might be because I don't control the engine in the right way.

If I increase the "Action radius settings" I've got the understanding that the missions is flown in longer distances, and then they take a long time to fly in the slow Albatros even if I increase the game speed to 2x.

Cheers

Look at this FM mod´s for Albatros DIII, if you want to increase the aeroplane perfomance  https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=32138.0 Just put them in these aircarft folder instead of the present FM file

Added a new Somme map text file to the first post, it includes all airfields and some key bridges for the Somme maps!
I have the airfield names from some "Red Baron 3D" maps and some from google earth, so this is no official map patch only made for a better overview during this campaign!
Put the folder "#DBW_1916 Airfields_Bridges_Somme_maps" into your "jsgmemods" folder and activate it with JSGME!
Thanks to "Boomer" for permission!

The Albatros D'III FM mod made a huge difference, it's much faster now which is more historically accurate AFAIK.

Is the transit speed of the planes in the "Aircraft Class settings" panel the speed which the AI should fly between way points?
For the Albatros DIII it's 140 km/h but my flight flew much faster since I flew at 180 km/h and couldn't keep up with them, but they slowed down eventually.

Yes, its the speed between the first waypoint after take off and ingress waypoint!
You can observe the created missions in FMB under "Your DBW install\\Missions\Campaign\"Service" (UN a.s.o.)\Current DCG campaign folder"! Open then the related dated .mis file!
