Prop Mod
« on: May 14, 2014, 07:01:21 PM »

Hi guys,
so when I look at aircraft pictures on the internet, I see these:

Disk-style:

Slightly pronounced prop blades:

Very pronounced prop blades:

Now, I know that there are already mods for these, but if you want to switch from one to the other on the same plane you have to shut the game down and take the mod out or just use a different version of the game.
I imagine that it has to do with sunlight. Would it be possible to make a mod that incorporates the angle of the sunlight and angle of view that it would automatically change it?

Just a thought. I have no experience with modding, so I don't know if this is possible or not.
I can't think of anything else to put on here, regarding what I was told in the rules of this forum. If there is any info to dig up, I can do it.

Thanks for your time!

these different styles has to do with camera shutter speed, the faster the shutter speed the less blur you have and if its fast enough you can make it look stationary, in real life these props will look like a disk like in the first picture, a camera with the correct shutter speed is needed to see the second and third image styles...

not to bash its a good idea and would support it but just want to make sure you understand what causes the prop to look like it does in photographs

yes, i feel that this request was made really out of a lack of knowledge on the subject (not trying to bash you, just saying), and no, as it's not possible to have a mod such as you describe.
i will remove this thread shortly.
thanks for understanding.

No no, that's totally fine! I see now that there was a lack of knowledge on this subject, and I am now just that much smarter.
Thanks!

On another note, on videos, again subject to cameras, I very often notice, when on outside, different looks of P-51 props compared to P-38 spinners, both being my favourite WWII planes:
P-51s mostly show the full disk inflight while P-38s tend to show the slightly less disk-like propellers in motion...at least on lower RPM or with less throttle.
Same with Corsairs, even 4 bladed ones.. :-\
Sorry for the stupid advert in the first video. I hereby take full distance from any crappy extra content of these links. ;)

Well, I'm a jet guy, and would not give my word on any of my WWII plane comment's validity TBH.

Actually, for film making it would be really nice to have a mod where you could "adjust camera parametres" so that the propellers produce a different look. The game can already take care of stroboscopic effects that cause the fuzzy, slowly moving propeller blades, but it would be nice to have options for having the blades appear thinner or wider. And for live gameplay it would be nice to have a more "disc-like" propeller.

I don't think the request is particularly out of place.

well, i don't mind leaving it up, as long as the ensuing discussion can at least yield some good information. ;)

For game play I prefer a prop appearance which is neither completely smoothed out nor trending toward a rather 'short-exposure', sharper aspect. A mostly smoothed look which retains sufficient structure to gauge RPM changes is good for me. This permits to match power settings with the section leader when formation flying, yet avoids a too-large fluctuation in scene brightness when looking through the prop. Moreover, a sharper prop when rendered at slower rotation is a jarring departure from the real-life visual appearance.

But for movies and gun cam clips, a suitably 'sharpish' prop looks good.

I would like to see a means to select fom a couple or few renderings for props via a menu in-game. This could be executed by assigning some number of slots which the user first populates with his/her selections, ideally being able to supply one's own name for each. Like, for example, "Smooth disk", "Mostly blurred", "Gun cam", etc.
