Crete - retexturing in HD 2048
« on: May 26, 2014, 11:02:23 AM »

I've been working for quite some time now on retexturing, repopulating etc of Viking4570's Crete map.
Was one of my favourite maps but since it is possible to use 2048x2048 size textures it was time to redo the Greek island.
My intention was only to retexture the map but since we have a lot more suitable objects the map was asking to be repopulated.
Existing cities look different now, added towns, villages and dwellings too. Changed heights of mountains and hills but all this redoing hassle won't change any existing (quick) mission or campaign.

It is getting close to completion now - end of June I think- and here are some screenies.

Stunning, still I would prefer a "drier" version; of course it all depends on what part of the island you are depicting, Crete combines everything, from desert to forest; I shall visit my ancestral island this summer (July) and provide photos if you are interested,

Beautiful map Uufflakke. I really like the textures you have chosen. Goes well with
this region. I am very enthusiastic about flying in your great maps. They are all so amazing.

In this Island, will you be including two big german cannons in a Hill-top cavern? for missions.

Because, this island reminds me of that classic film "The Guns of Navarone"  8)
 I must have watched that film 30 times during my lifetime so far .

Hi Uufflakke, are you retexturing the basic map or the HSFX version? It really needs some better textures, but the HSFX version does at least have some approximation of the towns and airfields modelled correctly.

@max_thehitman:
I won't include the radar guided guns on to the map. The movie is fiction and actually the island Navarone does not exist at all.
Everyone is free of course to add bunkers and guns as much as they like.

@cgagan:
Since I started retexturing I noticed how diverse the island is.
From the dry arid areas to sumptuous green fields. Mountains also have different colours. Not to mention the difference in colour between summer and winter. Never knew there was snow on top of white mountains in wintertime.
I used all kind of photos I found on the web to get a better understanding of how the landscape looks like. Google Earth or Flashearth was not a big help for that.
Thanks for your offer to send me some images of your forthcoming holidays to Crete but not really necessary. I hope map is finished before July.

For White Mountains in the west and surroundings I based my textures on this website: http://www.west-crete.com/white-mountains-summer-1.htm

Kind of comparison of photographs and my unedited screenshots. Landscape of Crete itself is very green.

:cheers:

I have two versions of Viking's Crete map. One is a modded (HSFX) V4.09 and a modded (DBW1.71) V4.10. And I don't see any difference.
Or has the map changed in a later HSFX version?

I hope someone can provide me with aerial photos for instance of Crete's airfield. I haven't found one.
Perhaps I can do something with it. Airfields are not my strongest point namely.
