Thanks for the above links. Some images are familiar to me.
I see what I can do with the info.

In the meantime... the island of Santorini.
Another kind of comparison of photos + some screenies.

Decided to leave the layout of airfields the same.
First: It is hard to find WWII images of these airfields.
Second: When leaving the layout as it is it won't effect existing (quick)missions or campaigns.
Third: Airfields are not my strongest point.  :D

This is how Maleme airfield looks at the moment.

And Santorini airfield.

To enliven the area a bit I added all kind of objects.

Hi Uufflakke, are you retexturing the basic map or the HSFX version? It really needs some better textures, but the HSFX version does at least have some approximation of the towns and airfields modelled correctly.

I have two versions of Viking's Crete map. One is a modded (HSFX) V4.09 and a modded (DBW1.71) V4.10. And I don't see any difference.
Or has the map changed in a later HSFX version?

I hope someone can provide me with aerial photos for instance of Crete's airfield. I haven't found one.
Perhaps I can do something with it. Airfields are not my strongest point namely.

The version currently in HSFX is an extended version that includes Rhodes. I rebuilt Heraklion airfield and added the three on Rhodes from as much historical evidence as I could find. Rethimnon I left alone as it wasn't in the right spot to start with, and Maleme didn't need altering. I also rebuilt the towns of Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion using whatever old sources I could find, but was limited by sticking with Viking's original textures and buildings. I really like the look of your landscape retexturing and will be interested to see how it turns out.
I see you've added buildings to Maleme, but historically there weren't any; not even a blast pen or gun position. The RAF camped in the olive groves behind and jumped into slit trenches when the Luftwaffe attacked. The AA guns were very exposed near the runway and were picked off pretty easily. I went there a couple of years back (got trapped in Chania by the Icelandic ash cloud - result!) and it doesn't look much different today. The runway's been slightly better surfaced but there still doesn't appear to be any buildings of note.

To get the redish color on the cliff side, you could look into Viking's Grand Canyon map.

I found a WWII aerial photo of Maleme with a lot of tents, some foxholes and all kind of stuff (oildrums, crates, spare parts?) scattered all over the place.
So buildings are out, tents are in.

Fantastic! As soon as it's ready, I can dig out my copy of Chris Shores " Air War over Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete" and get mission building :)

To get the redish color on the cliff side, you could look into Viking's Grand Canyon map.

Made 2 new textures for Santorini cliffs.  More redish, with sediment layers and some vegetation.
More like the original cliffs and colours blend well with existing textures.
