You may won't like me after this words, but personally I will not respect a man, who was killing fathers and grandfathers of my homeland.

He was a great soldier and pilot. But, he was not a great man. He was a declared nazi and follower of Hitler. You should read books about him and his daughter statements.

I've read that he was controversial after the war due to his firm Nazi beliefs, but I've never read exactly what he said/believed. I'm curious about the daughter, too. Any details, Willy? I'm too lazy to find a biography of Rudel  :P

To my mind, Rudel was an absolutely unrepetant Nazi. I don't argue for one second he was brave, but reading his words and statements, it was tinged with an air of fanaticism.

I can't call any man with his views and convictions, 'Great'.

There were some great German Pilots, and great patriots who flew first and foremost for their country. Many of them had successful careers in the post war Luftwaffe, including Barkhorn, Steinhoff and Hartmann , who I met and who just talked about his first love, flying :) A very nice man, though I doubt the Russians would think so.

I also don't think Rudel was great man in his views, A great pilot and brave sure. Yes, he was a fanactic. Radge I am sorry you feel that way, does that mean all those at war with your country? While I understand how you may feel don't forget your country also killed others in the Stalin regime. Sorry, but I know of Poles who don't actually hold up some of the Soviets in high regard. (Actually Finland, Latvia, etc. even citzens of Soviet Empire who suffered.) I will not respect Stalinists, while I do respect most Russian soldiers, Polish, Finnish and German soldiers; actually all nationalities caught up in madness a like! No offence. :)

It is not a question about who killed more baronbutcher, it's a question about this man although supposedly a brave soldier (those tanks destroyed numbers could be trimmed down easily with a thorough research) was kinda fanatic monster with awful believes that cannot be justified and doesn't deserve to be admired at all or be qualified as "great". That's all and no point or justify against that.

Of course you can admire almost all soviet soldier or pilots, because a regime acts are not their acts and/or beliefs. It's quite different.

Good point there Ala13_ManOWar! We have respect for ALL brave men and women who sacrificed their youth and their lives in the service of ALL countries engaged in WW2, but we have no respect for unrepentent Nazis...

We live (here in the western world) happily in peace. I was lucky because I was allowed until 1958 to see these "better" world.

The "Nazi Reich" was a disgrace and this evil will be written in all history books until mankind is extinct.

To ensure that all German have to live forever. It hurts when one is repeatedly reminded but it should be!

Rudel was just one of those million Nazis. Please, never again anywhere in the world Nazis!

That we should all want for our children and us!

I always feel very "uncomfortable" when we talk about Rudel.
After wwII, he was involved in an organization which exfiltrated Nazi from Europe (unproperly named "Odessa" from a book)

Thank you Royzewic.

Rudel is a  hero to me.

What should one say: it is fine to admire soldiers who fought for communists and Stalin-followers, Mao followers etc. who murdered millions, English and American pilots  who bombed women and children and stayed unrepentant - but not a German exceptional man (and yes please do read up on what he said after the war) who survived and never gave up. He was a great man indeed. As a German I honour him. I feel realy sorry for Germans who can't accept their own Heros. Everything will disappear over time, but the great deeds of great men is eternal.

Admire what is better than yourself, not the other way around.
