The Morane-Saulnier N, also known as the Morane-Saulnier Type N, was a French monoplane fighter aircraft of the First World War. Designed and manufactured by Morane-Saulnier, the Type N entered service in April 1915 with the Aéronautique Militaire designated as the MS.5C.1. It also equipped four squadrons of the Royal Flying Corps, in which it was designated the Bullet, and was operated in limited numbers by the 19th Squadron of the Imperial Russian Air Force.

Description[edit]

While the Type N was a graceful-looking aircraft and utilised an advanced, aerodynamic design, it was not easy to fly due to its stiff controls (using wing warping instead of ailerons) and high landing speed. The Type N mounted a single unsynchronized forward-firing machine gun (either a .303-in Vickers or 7.9 mm Hotchkiss) which used the deflector wedges, first demonstrated on the Morane-Saulnier Type L, in order to fire through the propeller arc.

A large metal "casserolle" spinner designed to streamline the aircraft caused the engines to overheat because the spinner deflected air away from the engine. In 1915, the spinner was removed from the design and no more overheating problems were found. The removal of the spinner caused very little loss in performance.

The Type N was not particularly successful. Only 49 aircraft were built and it was quickly rendered obsolete by the pace of aircraft development.

If someone builds it, and I can install it, I'll certainly write a single mission for it, and include it in campaigns.

cheers

This aircraft, despite many shortcomings was responsible, even before the Fokker Scourge, for at least two initial victories of the war in the hands of the French ace Jean Navarre in 1915, one of the first victories of the Russian ace Kazakov.

It would be nice to have the Type N or the Type L (parasol) for early war scenarios:

There's a Morane L by Dreamk, if someone wants to give it a FM, and slot. Not near as much work as building one from scratch. The article is on page 32 of the DBW1916 patch thread.

Just ask Dreamk. He said the list of partly finished planes was available to anyone who could make a FM, and slot. there is a topic on p32 of the DBW1916 mod where MURDOC has posted a list of Dreamk s unfinished WWI projects. The topic is quite old.

iirc those are "just" 3d models with only the mapping done

I think it was more advanced than that. Here is a copy of the relevant thread.

OK - As I told Skipper, I need help for 2 things:
1) skins - I am not a good skinner - but I can upload the templates for whoever is doing to make skins for these planes.
2) FM - here too, whoever wants to help is wellcome
I am now finishing the mapping of the 3D models and creating the basic templates of the aircraft in group 2 (I'll add also a Breguet 14 A2, B2 and B2 bis, their models are almost finished) and beginning the cockpit part (I made quite a number of new ww1 gauges)  - if someone wants to help with cockpits, it will enable us to get faster to the exporting process.

It may be quite easier than that - the main issue is to build new emd files for the various engines used:
Let's begin by the 4 main types: Clerget 130HP, Gnome monosoupape 80HP, le Rhone 100HP and Salmson 150HP,
Then take a look at the behaviour of the planes using these engines, checking against actual performances data,
and then assess the impact of changing the power (for instance 100HP instead of 80HP for the Gnome) on flight behaviour, and try to see what other parameters need to be changed in order to keep the same kind of flight quality except speed and torque that are obviously different with a different power.
For this last part are needed good virtual "test pilots". I Hope to find them here.
I'll upload later the parameters of these engines.
Maneuvrability depends of carefully entering the necessary dimensions in the fmd (distances from the center of gravity of the model to the center of the elevators, of the ailerons and such...) meaning carefully measuring these dimensions on the 3dmodel - this is impossible on frankenplanes but here we have 3dmodels in hands so we can do that.

 :)

Coincidence... Yesterday I started to build an old Revell 1:72 model kit of a Morane Type N... The kit is older than I am, but looks nice. Can't wait to finish it. It is my third model.

Will use normal brushes to paint it.

Please wish me good luck! (Husband said this one I must build all alone...)  >:(

Always tought it was a really elegant airplane. Will be great to fly it in the sim.
