new graphic card gtx 650 or gtx750
« on: July 14, 2014, 02:44:20 PM »

guys
looking at installing a new dedicated graphic card in my desktop pc
whats the difference between asus gtx 650 1 gb ddr5 and gtx 750 1gb ddr5 oc
only difference that stands out to me (layman) is gtx 650 has support for 4 monitors (not a requirement for me)
so what do you think
note my motherboard has integrated graphics amd radeon r/hd 7000 a-series apu
so am I wasting my money with either  above dedicated graphic cards

Both will be a massive upgrade over your integrated graphics and will work great with IL-2.   ;)

I recently got a GTX 650 with 1gb gddr5 and I must say I'm very pleased with it... IL-2 looks amazing and runs like a dream at 1920x1080!   :)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm interested in getting a GTX 650 since they can be had for cheap now.

What are your AA settings? I'd like to be able to run 8xSQ and it's the bottleneck with my current card (an old 9600GSO).

Not sure if this helps, but I'm using a GTX 550 Ti with 8xCSAA at steady 60FPS (well, despite very large cities or massive explosion effects where the frame rate might drop to 30 FPS).
I don't see a good point in using QSAA over CSAA, but anyway since the 650 is a good 20% ahead of the 550Ti (http://www.hwcompare.com/13482/geforce-gtx-550-ti-vs-geforce-gtx-650/) I think that you should face no issues.

Best regards - Mike

Yes, I agree with Storebror... don't use QSAA, rather use CSAA. I get a steady 60fps (V-sync is on) using 16xCSAA with the GTX 650. This is with 16x Anisotropic Filtering, in-game detail settings set to perfect and a resolution of 1920x1080.
It even runs fine if I use 32xCSAA, but I honestly can't see much of difference past 16xCSAA, so that is what I run it at.

Another thing I really like about the GTX 650 is how cool it runs compared to all my previous graphics cards, even under full load the temperature remains surprisingly low.  8)

Power consumption at full load is also very low, which means you don't need a monster PSU to run this card.   ;)

The 650 is also a very compact card, which is great if you don't have a lot of space in your case.

Thanks for the info Storebror and trent! Note however on that chart the 550ti comes out ahead by 28% on pixel rate vs the 650 which is most important for AA. On the other hand I've found that site to be not so reliable. There is some advantage from newer more efficient processors that their specs don't seem to capture. For instance they say the GTX 650 is slightly better than the GTX 750, yet in all the tests I've seen the GTX 750 is way ahead (~70% typically). That is a very power efficient card also, even lower power than the GTX 650.

Here is a test that compares all these: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7764/the-nvidia-geforce-gtx-750-ti-and-gtx-750-review-maxwell/13

I'm just getting back into IL2 after putting a new computer together. It runs well enough on the Intel 4400 onboard graphics but I don't seem to have a way to get any AA at all. Guess the game cannot enable that? I know there is no way to configure it via Intel.

Have either of you looked at the GPU load when your FPS bogs down? Is it the GPU or CPU that is the bottleneck? I wonder if it would even help to get a decent card like a 750 ti... if the real limiter will be my i3-4150 3.5 Ghz CPU.

The GTX 650 is indeed faster than the GTX 550-ti as shown in this video...

As far as your question regarding bottlenecking... I would consider the biggest bottleneck to be the old IL-2 game engine.
Even very expensive gaming rigs still experience huge fps drops in certain places in IL-2 (huge cities, multiple explosions with lots of burning smoke etc). This is because the old IL-2 game engine cannot take full advantage of the latest hardware. Another thing to keep in mind is that IL-2 is also quite CPU dependent... specifically the single core performance of the CPU.

So, no. I do not think I am GPU limited in IL2 at all. I've even underclocked the GTX 650 by 20% to see if it would significantly reduce performance in IL-2, and I couldn't tell much of a difference in gameplay. For me, either the GTX 650 or GTX 750 is sufficient, but if you play other games with very high requirements, you might benefit from the Ti version.  ;)

That is a very power efficient card also, even lower power than the GTX 650.

They are indeed both very efficient cards as far as power consumption is concerned, which is great if you don't want to upgrade your PSU. However, the claim by Nvidia that the GTX 750 requires less power has been shown to be false in real life gaming tests. Especially under load the GTX 650 clearly consumes less power. The GTX 750 clearly consumes more power under load than Nvidia claims the maximum is. In fact, the GTX 750 Ti consumes less power than the standard non-ti GTX 750. Check out the power draw on some of the cards further down the list.  :o

Average Power Consumption: Crysis 2 at 1920x1080, Extreme profile, representing a typical gaming power draw. Average of all readings (12 per second) while the benchmark was rendering (no title/loading screen).
Peak Power Consumption: Crysis 2 at 1920x1080, Extreme profile, representing a typical gaming power draw. Highest reading during the test.

Thanks. Sounds like the GTX 650 should be more than adequate for this game. Have you checked to see if your GPU ever maxes out? There is an option in Inspector to show a graph of this. I used it a lot when I was trying to optimize my old system.

The power consumption charts you show aren't really fair because it is an OC 750 that uses even more power than the 750 ti. Also at max power the 750  and 750 ti will be rendering many more frames (~70-90% more). In frames/watt the 750 and 750 ti are way ahead.

Regarding your question about GPU load while playing IL-2... I use GPU-Z to check my GPU load.

Below is a screenshot of the GPU-Z statistics while playing a mission.
This was while playing a very busy low level ground attack mission with 32 aircraft over the airfield, strafing ground targets, droppings bombs, firing rockets, dozens of AAA constantly firing, and with lots of smoke and explosions.
Game Resolution is set to 1920x1080. All game details are set to perfect and maxed out.
I'm using HT's Water Mod, The HD & True colour mod, Big clouds mod, Jero's cowlings, spinners & wheels, Visual Mod 8 as well as many other mods. Game version is 4.12.2 with Modact 5.3 + extra flyables.

In Nvidia Control Panel notable settings are:

Antialiasing setting = 16xCSAA
Anisotropic Filtering = 16x
Texture Filtering - Quality = Quality
Vertical Sync = On

I made sure that only gameplay time during the actual attack is included in the values and graphs below with no loading screens (so no GPU idle time), and no sections without intense action (I basically tried to stress my PC a bit to show GPU performance during action).
As you can see the average GPU load during action was only 46%. This clearly shows that the GTX 650 is very comfortable running IL-2 at max settings.
The summer has arrived here and it is a hot day today, but as you can see the GPU's average temperature during gameplay is still a pretty cool 43.8°C.
Any fps drop experienced while running this card will clearly be because of either the old game engine's inability to fully utilize modern hardware or CPU limitations.

Great info! Yes, you aren't taxing the GPU too heavily at all.

What CPU do you have? And which model of GTX 650?
