Runway textures in FMB
« on: September 19, 2014, 07:56:52 AM »

Hi all,

I tried to place new runway textures in FMB (4.12.2, ModAct 5.3), over the existing ones. Somehow, new plates (e.g. "concrete runway") placed over grass partially don't show. Any ideas?

Tnx, TAP.

P.S. tried to upload image, but got the message "not allowed to post external links. "

Hello

+1

I tried to place some stock runway plates in FMB (HSFX 7.03) on Canon english channel map airfields (because the original very, very low resolution textures of this airfield are not to my taste...)

these plates appear and disappear randomly. I think we should change (in the static.ini) the height of the plates so that they appear on top of other textures. I have not succeeded in this way. If someone could have an idea to solve this problem that allow it to change this map elegantly without having to redo all aerodromes in the FMB unlocked.

Best regards, Thierry.

tbauchot;
I've tried some of the runway objects on the stock Normandy map and don't have that issue (i.e. the 'new' objects show clearly over the 'old' map object).
I know from my own experience creating static objects that sometimes they disappear depending on the camera view.  This is an ongoing problem which doesn't seem to have a solution.

Tapir;
Your runway may appear flat on the map but isn't.  The existing ones are part of the map and are contoured to the surface so to speak whereas the new objects you're trying to replace are perfectly flat and won't match any uneven contours already on the map.  Not sure if I explained that correctly.

If you want a graphic example go into the Stationary Ships list and select one of the first test runways.  Place it on the ground and move it around.  Parts of it will definitely disappear until you find a spot on the map that is a large enough flat area so that you see all of it.

All that to say that you can add runway textures but if the ground near the airfield is not totally flat then part of your object will disappear into that "raised" ground.  The only workaround I've found is to avoid non-flat spots.

Hope this helps.

Those of you who have a FMB+ install can flatten airfields in map_h.tga...you mark the airbase with the height tool in the FMB with an extreme high or low and then save the changes.
Open the changed map_H.tga with gimp and find your marked area visually by the dark or bright dots. (Best mark the airbase generously wide all around with a couple of spikes ingame before saving.)
Now in gimp make the entire marked area one height with RGB.
Save as greyscale.
