I've been running IL2 and it's various permutations since the days of Windows 98. Recently I bought a new computer, my third since playing the sim. My DBW build 7.1, v4.10 transferred smoothly to windows 8, and was running fine. This week, after many requests from Microsoft to upgrade to Window 8.1, and many refusals from me, they decided to install it anyway, against my will, and permission.

Now my heavily modded game will not load successfully. After some dicking around I got it to load, but my monitor goes blank and my mouse, (trackball), and joystick wont work. Are there some steps I can take to get it working successfully? Please.

alt+tab out of the game and jump back in...?

the cause of this may be that there is an other program running [firefox... explorer... fodoshoppe...], seen this on my own machine in the past

No success with your solution. There's a lot of weirdness going on. The screen stays black. I can hear the intro music playing. It also seems to want to drop down my screen resolution. It's as though the monitor is not supported by the game, although it worked perfectly in Windows 8 at the higher resolution. After Cntrl,Alt,Del out my monitor comes back at the lower resolution. I'm totally puzzled, and also royally pissed because I didn't want Windows 8.1. Microsoft just blatantly installed it despite my "no thanks". I appreciate your reply however.

Same problem for a friend of mine with Win8 OS. Whatever the version he launched, he couldn't use the joystick at all (in windows game controllers, all buttons and axis are working but not in IL-2)

Lets see
1-Did you put the game on the hd not in the program folder.
2-Go to the control panel and click on updates then click on change updates then change it to notify but do not download or install updates. Or change it to never check for updates. They do not like it but tuff. Since you did not do the above when you got the machine your fault. Now you know that is the first thing you do change the update setting in one of the ways listed above.
Now I believe Bravo has 8.1 ask him how he got the game to operate in that OS.

Or pull the hd hook to a ada/ida/sata usb adapter and format and install win7

maaaan... this can't be for real.
not only am i lost but i got to shake my head.
7 is only a *cough* legal option if the 8/8.1 version you have is a pro version.
But... *looks through old files* we can talk about solutions for that later, if needed.

I've had them all with IL-2, Win2k through 8.1, Home, Pro, Ultimate...
No such issues, never ever. There's no good reason for this either, despite... when something inside your IL-2 folder changed.
And this leads us to the most obvious thing to try first:
Go ahead reinstall IL-2 "clean vanilla", whatever version that is for you (DVD 4.07, Steam 4.12 or whatever else).
Don't install it into "Program Files" folder if you've got the choice (you have the choice when you use the DVD, you even have it when you use Steam, but that's a different story since you'd have to move all your Steam games then, so if you have the Steam version, you can as well install IL-2 into the default location).
Then try to see if you get this game to run as you'd do normally (use setup.exe in IL-2 folder to do basic settings and only if these work right go ahead fine tuning conf.ini).

Do it step by step.
If the door of your house would be locked and your key isn't working, you won't burn down the house either, would you?
