editing Map_T in Photoshop
« on: October 20, 2014, 08:06:42 PM »

I've been working on retexturing the Singapore map, and need to edit the Map_T to add more variety to the landscape. I've never done this before, so I downloaded KevinP's tutorials as well as two different RGB value guides. The problem is, when I open Map_T in photoshop, the RGB values for a given texture slot are different from the guides say they should be. Example: the area that is wooded is supposed to be RGB 24, according to the guides, but the color-picker in PS gives me RGB 35. I then tested the ocean: should be 28, but it's 40. I tried the same thing on two other maps and got the exact same result. All the guides, tutorials, and threads here reference Gimp, but the color selector for Photoshop can't be any different (the shades are in the file, afterall), so what is wrong here? Anybody here ever edit Map_Ts in Photoshop? Here's a screenshot of what PS tells me the woods are:

Update: so I just checked the RGB values in a bmp version of the same Map_T, and so far they seem to be correct. Why are the colors not right in the TGA if that's what the game is actually utilizing? I'm probably missing something very basic here...  :-[

In Photshop assign the Profile to sGray from here: "Edit/Assign Profile..." and then Profile: "sGray". Then it shows grayscales correct.

I think you mean in toolbar: IMAGE/MODE/ASSIGN PROFILE/sGRAY.  ;)

I know the feeling. I can still learn new software, but I don't have the time or patience (plus I'm lazy).

I know the feeling too. But then the other way around. On XP I became so familiar with PhotoImpact but after my switch to W8.1 I was forced to use something else because of incompatability.
GIMP was an alternative for a while and now I have to find my way with Photoshop. But I don't have the time and patience anymore to even learn the basics.

I found gimp quite cool for editing maps.
For cockpits and textures though I find there must be more and better stuff, e.g. to re-tint a section that is using textual plaques and not affecting the text as well, the picker tools in gimp suck. IMO.
But it is not as limited as I initially thought, all my mods are done with Irfan View and gimp...and manipulating text files.

After assigning to the profile sGray, does one need to de-select this before saving? Or can I leave the profile active at all times?
