Two dumb questions about radio chatter
« on: October 26, 2014, 11:02:47 AM »

Running DBW 1.71. Two questions:

1. Although the Samples/Speech folders contain Greek voices (5 "actors"), when I set an aircraft nationality to Greece, I hear RAF voices. This is only true for Greece. All other voices contained in the speech folders match the nationalities chosen.

2. All of the speech folders contain multiple actors and many, many phrases I've never heard, like "My guns aren't firing" and "Stand by for Orders". Have I just not encountered these phrases or is something else up?

Any insight would be appreciated.

not sure about the Greece thing, but there are many phrases for every nationality which i''ve never heard in the game before, not once in the 13 years i've been playing the sim....
about the Greece issue, perhaps it depends which 'actors' there are, you say only 5, but most nationalities use more than 5, so perhaps those particular 'actors' aren't included, and it's defaulting to RAF? just a thought....

Huumm. I've tried to figure out where I got the Greek chatter from. It appears - but I'm not sure - that it was part and parcel of the DBW Superpack and/or UP3, included therein, but I don't know. I can't seem to locate anywhere a separate download for Greek radio chatter, nor can I find on my CD-ROMs any saved download for it - and I'm usually good at saving those things. Never occurred to me that I might have fewer voices than needed.

Addendum: I found the following comments below a YouTube video depicting a Greek P24 dogfight in IL-2 which addresses the Greek voices and in which Greek radio chatter is heard:

"Hello, Could you please tell me where did you download the speech files? Also, if possible, tell me how you installed them aswell. Cheers!

In response to your querry, links now added in description of the video.

The original source for the greek pack of 5 voices incompleted, was 2010-11post at UP, by II./ZG2_Gaga. The author claimed his finish work of 9 voices would be included in final UP pack. UP3.0 RC4, the last known release of? early 2012, does not include any Forgotten Countries at all, therefore no Greece! A later releases of a Forg.Countries packs by a 3rd parties had greeks still speaking english. The link to 5 voices post will be added to description above. ( NO LINK CAN BE HERE ).

can you tell me the donwload link plz?"

End of comments.

This colloquy suggests that a five actor voice pack was included at some point and I certainly have a five actor voice pack, so I presume it was incorporated in UP3, and therefore, part of DBW 1.71. Yet, I have no Greek voices when running. Odd.

Opened up the sound file and, yes, there are voices.

But it's all Greek to me.

Sorry, couldn't resist that one.

As an experiment, I removed the Greek voice files from the Greek (GR) folder in "Samples" and replaced them with the full compliment of German voices. Despite doing so, when aircraft were flown with Greece as the nationality, British voices were heard. So, for some reason, it's defaulting to the standard Allied voices (British), irrespective of the voice files contained therein.

could it be that a file is missing, or that a config file overrides the greek voices to be replaced/redirected by RAFspeek?
just a shot in the dark...

I don't think any files are missing. As to the config file, that sounds logical but it's beyond me to figure out.
