Hartman was ot a bad shot, he just had  a tactic saving his ammo for the next prey. You do not have world record being a bad shot. The converging of the gun was set to the individual pilots preference , but my point is muzzle velocity and calibre got nothing to do with this. it belong to another discussion

Have you read Hartmann's book? Hartmann admits he was a bad shot. His tactic was to get close. So close that it cause him to force land over a dozen times due to debris hitting his plane. About muzzle velocity and calibre.. I'd take a HV .273 over a .303 any day ;)

If you get a chance, it's a very good book. The part about Hartmann watching LA 7 and P51 dogfighting each other over Romania is fascinating.

I heard about that.

There is even an (unconfirmed) story that Ivan Kozhedub, Russia's ace-of-aces shot down two P-51Ds in a mission where he found some B-17s under Luftwaffe attack. Apparently, he was jumped by the -51s and shot them down in self-defense. The story has not been confirmed, and even with the supposed guncam film presented as evidence, the circumstances are suspect at the very least.

Interesting, if nothing else.

On Tony Wood website, both these P-51 losses have been verified by USAAF sources during April 1945.

This above, is a documentary/movie historical documentary, which, like many similar reports about the bombing raids, is very sad as well.

I lately watched "The Finest Hour" a BBC documentary I'd think and it was depressing as well.

Here I watched 30-35 mins and then cut if for today since I wanted to eat and am not able to eat while watching stuff about people losing lives.

The dichotomoy of our hobby maybe, what we see as joy, if it reaches to the bombing war over Europe, is often unavoidably mixxed with horror. Personally, I find WWII was one of the biggest horrors of the past 1500 years.
From time to time good to remember how people on all sides suffered...and that we nowadays have peace and can enjoy the warbirds as sports planes.

Still I like our hobby very much and intend to fly some Stang today, but I know why I always found documentaries about WWII and the nazi period frustrating...because it was.

Well, sorry for the sermon, thanks again for the link, I hope I can watch the rest later or tomorrow.
