Dornier Libelle
« on: November 04, 2014, 12:36:35 PM »

History

The Dornier Libelle, also designated Do A, was a German open-cockpit, all-metal, parasol wing, monoplane flying-boat aircraft, with partly fabric covered wings.

The Libelle I, a high-wing monoplane of all metal design, had the rear wing sections and the control services covered with fabric. The intrinsically stable hull with several bulkheads and a transverse step was equipped with the well-proven Dornier sponsons. Installation of small skids on the hull bottom allowed the take-off and landing on ice surfaces. Three seats were located in the center of the hull, two in front and side by side equipped with dual controls, with the third seat behind those. The wing consisted of two halves connected to the wing center section and braced against the hull by means of two struts each.
The novelty of this design was the foldable wing to ensure small space requirements during transport. The aircraft was powered by a five cylinder Siemens radial engine rated at 55 HP and installed on a nacelle located on the rigid center wing section. Fuel was delivered by a wind driven pump from the tank in the hull to a gravity tank behind the engine. The hull tail was equipped with a rigid tail unit with one piece rudder and elevator.
First flight on 16 August 1921.

Variants

Do A: Two prototypes of the Libelle

Libelle I: The standard production model, 5 built fitted with Siemens-Halske Sh 4 engines and two built with 59.7 kW (80 hp) Siemens-Halske Sh 5 engines.

Libelle II: The improved Libelle II was powered by Siemens-Halske Sh 5 or 75 kW (101 hp) Siemens-Halske Sh 11 engines. Other engines fitted to Libelle II aircraft include the Bristol Lucifer and the ADC Cirrus. Three built.

Dear P51vsFw190,

reading your article / post about the Dornier Libelle, version I and II differences, I regarded that it's not mentioned that version II also had an elongation of the Wingspan from 8.5m (version I) to 9.8m (version II). I think this should be added / corrected. Otherwise I can state that your article / post is really excellent, thanks.

At the moment, as a Re-Beginner in electric motor airplanes, I start with a "Lucky Duck" 200% (Ruder and Elevator only = 2 axes) as a Depron build plane, build as shown in a German magazine and afterwards this plane (Dornier Libelle II) as scratch-build (I'm a model constructer since many years). Therefor any information i can get is usefull.
