Historical P-400 Airacobra campaign - New Guinea 1942
« on: November 09, 2014, 12:29:33 PM »

Are you feeling up for a P-400 campaign ? Because I am finished with a short but very difficult historically based New Guinea/Port Moresby campaign with the 4oth "Fightin' Red Devils" fighter squadron. Yes, you will be flying the reject P-400 "flying brick", better known as the "P-39 with a zero on it's tail".

WARNING: Probably only highly skilled pilots should attempt this mission series, as it is going to require skillz to survive (just as it did historically).
Whiners and wimps should not apply. :D  :P

NOTE: You should probably select the rank of colonel, to ensure the campaign missions play as designed.

You will have to unzip the file and drop the folders into your main IL2 installation folder. Included are a couple of skin options.
Some pilots flying there did have custom nose art.

You can get the zip below, which includes the campaign and the custom P-400 skins. Oh yea, the skins are not really mine, I just edited a skin done by Beebop in 2012 to suit my own purposes and make them have the red 40th FS markings and a squadron badge for nose art :

I mean think about it. The P-400 is arguably one of the crappiest fighters of WWII. It was rejected by the British because it did not perform as advertised.....and the 40th FS (amongst a select few others) got stuck flying the things in New Guinea against some of the best and most experienced Japanese naval fighters of the war, the crack pilots of Tainan Kokutai. LOL It is little wonder they took a thrashing, however, some of Americas best aces flew here. The pilots who got kills in the P400 usually went on to become aces.

  • There is no failure in doing; only in not trying.

Don't forget the 67th FS with the Cactus Air Force on the Canal with their 5 P-400s.

hehe Believe it or not, it isn't really that bad of a plane. If you use your head , conserve E, and utlize your squad mates when you can, and of course, skaddadle when you need to (aka: tuck tail and run...........which is probably the P-400s strongest asset lol......although its guns do tear up what it hits...), you should be alright. :) I have had a good bit of fun testing the missions. If you like a challenge, and want to get a bit of a simulated taste of what the boys went through over there, and like a bit of history, you should enjoy this little campaign :) I might offer a Japanese POV as well, if there is any interest.

So, I finished up the scenarios and gave the campaign a test run yesterday. Whew !!! hehehe What a treat :)  Action is intense ! I lost my first airframe on the second mission of day one, but bailed safely over the owen stanley mountain range. I lost my second airframe two days later during a japanese assault on Port Morseby, but again managed to bail safely.............by this time I had managed to rack up a serious kill list though..............but mission seven "Thunderstruck", proved to be my undoing. I was killed in action when a few canon rounds ignited my fuel tank and my aircraft exploded before I had time to bail... Alas..............I was just  another stat on the japanese kill list LOL But I took SEVENTEEN of them with me in the 6 missions I survived before I bought the farm :D ENJOY !! Post up your final scores for all of us to envy should you actually make it through the campaign alive hehehe

Link for the campaign is on the first post of the thread :)

Looking forward to this campaign.

It was one of Chuck Yeagers favorites when training he wrote  in his book! But it needed to be treated gently!

A few notes after 3 missions (had to flew twice n°1): 4 kills with 2 bails out (1 head-on collision and 1 shot down).
- Very good immersion and well populated base
- The opposition is really tough (I wouldn't like to fly it with the 4.12 AI)
- The Video folder is empty (same as Gaston)
- I have the "Mission Pro" mod activated and it changed the missions due to the fact I didn't choose the correct rank to fly leader, and I was relegated to n°4 in formation; so I did not flew the missions as you originally planned them (but I enjoyed them nonetheless): mission 1 and 2 were airstarts, and I think at least n°2 was planned for takeoff.
It would be a good thing to tip other players to choose a correct rank.

Thanks again for your campaign
