F-80/T-33 softer nose, cockpit, tail top
« on: November 30, 2014, 11:58:08 AM »

Hey guys! I`ve been skinning F-80s for a while now, and since there is a lot of model viewing and detail checking while skinning, I kept noticing pointy edges of the nose, cockpit and til top of the plane. I was wondering if someone would be willing to soften them a bit?

Here is the photoshopped pic of the softer edges, posted by mr. Bomberkiller:

Looks much better IMO...

If someone reads this, I would like to add a FM request:

The roll speed of these planes in all IL-2 versions is wrong.
I read in another article a report of a pilot who flew with a T-33A of the USAF and he said the roll was so sensitive with the boost aileron controls, it was impossible for a non pro to keep the wings level.

Also here:

http://books.google.de/books?id=zxsAFkQD7YcC&pg=PA35&lpg=PA35&dq=F-80+Shooting+Star+roll+speed&source=bl&ots=XL7MgT9mZm&sig=XWEayPxJuRbdi06j4X5YqQdosDE&hl=de&sa=X&ei=4fKAVIC9C4fJPc_2gMAF&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=F-80%20Shooting%20Star%20roll%20speed&f=false

"The airplane has a very high rate of roll at any altitude." (With boosted controls on, this is the point here..)

Later it goes on explaining that the slow roll rate at higher speeds only occours in case the boost is shut off. ;) That is what we have in IL-2 and it is not realistic.

 :P

The above was a Google search and contains the manual..it seems...

I would be very greatful if some kind FM guru could add enhanced roll speeds. :P if not..well, what should I do, threat you with smileys... :D If not, no prob. My fav jet in IL-2 is the Mig-21 atm.

Good point Tom! IIRC, back when P-80 first came in IL-2, it had a hell of a roll rate!

Here is a quote from "Fighter pilot`s heaven" by Donald Lopez:

"On my first P-80 flight, on February 20, 1946, it took a few minutes to become accustomed to the boosted ailerons. I flew along gently rocking my wings after takeoff because of overcontrolling. Luckily, there were no other planes nearby (rocking one's wings is the signal to join formation). Actually it wouldn't have mattered, because no one could have caught up with the P-80, being the only jet in the sky. I soon overcame that tendency and found the ailerons responsive, giving the airplane a high rate of roll. I could perform a quick roll by just moving the stick sharply in the direction I wished to roll. No rudder at all was used, very different from the aileron-rudder coordination required to slow roll in propeller airplane."

Anyway... Is anyone interested in giving them some smoothness and FM edit? Her cockpit is soo smooth now, argh, she is a delight to fly!
