new water splash
« on: January 10, 2015, 02:58:24 PM »

after watching some gun camera footage of kamikaze raids and such, I noticed that very few of the aircraft that hit the water made the large fountain you see in most games. instead, they made something similar to the dust cloud of a bomb from something like Gurner's effects, followed by a smaller fountain.

most noticeable at 2:20 and 2:57
I am not saying it doesn't happen, because the video does show it multiple times, but it doesn't happen every time a plane hits the water.

what i see are kamikazes hitting the water and the explosives detonating causing a depth charge like explosion... most of the time a plane hits the water it won't explode anyways, it will crumple and usually cause a small wave... something harder to replicate in il2

I do, of course, realize this, and I'm not asking for a complete redo of the water splashes. Something that I have noticed, however, with bombs that hit the ground in 4.12.2., is that there are 2 different explosions that are possible, a fountain only or a fountain wit a dust cloud. it seems like the fountain only is triggered when a bomb hits at a steep angle with high speed, possible emulating the effect of the bomb burying itself into the ground. The fountain with dust cloud, however, seems to happen bore when you have the bomb hit at a shallow angle, like if you skip the bomb on the ground, therefore only burying itself only half way or not at all. I would think that this could be transferred to work on water as well, but then again I have no knowledge on the subject.

Speaking as a stone-age Neanderthal running 4.08, I've noted that effects are sometimes shared by different events. For one, plane crashes use the same effect(s) as a 250kg bomb explosion. I should hope later versions have addressed this, for it's annoyingly restrictive.

yeah, I've just grown to accept that, accounting for the fact that aircraft are still made out of explodium whenever they hit the ground. the destruction modelling for this game just seems old, and i don't know if its possible to change it. I say that hoping that someone says "challenge accepted" and pulls something amazing out of no where after someone agrees and says it cant be done... like supersonic flight, self guided missiles, thrust vectoring, radar, and space battleships... you get the point  ;)
