TV GUIDED HS-293D
« on: January 22, 2015, 05:31:55 PM »

We already have the HS-293 of course which is guided after release with the bombsight keys while keeping an eye on the attached flares. It's fun and very challenging to say the least. But what has intriqued me for some time is the fact that the Germans had a TV guided version "D" model. The US was also perfecting some television guided glide bombs as well during the war.

First, a quickie video I made to show basically what I envision. For the D version TV POV I used the Me-410 telephoto sight.
(Hey, it's not a Golden Globe winner and lacks audio. Just go with it!)

There isn't much to post about the weapon specs since it already exists in the game minus the first person TV view from the nose. There is this pic of the D model which only differs from the in-game version with it's antenna in the tail and a lens in the nose.

The real issue, I guess, is how to add a nose view CAMERA to a weapon in the game. Some say it can't be done, others have indicated it's completely doable. Making the view black and white like early TV might be asking too much and personally I think that's overkill. But finding a way to add a camera to this particular weapon could also open the door to the B-17 carried GB-4 radio controlled television glide bomb and perhaps other TV guided weapons.

Obviously, I feel this adds to the whole 1946 secret weapons aspect of the game while maintaining some historical accuracy.
I found this quote: "The Hs-293D was an important milestone since it introduced a nose mounted television camera and radio uplink to the launch aircraft, the aim being for the bomber to attack through an overcast. This variant was distinctive due to the use of a tail mounted Yagi array for the video uplink, and a reshaped nose for the camera aperture. The first successful trials were conducted in August, 1944, using Seedorf 3 and Tonne 4a guidance equipment. German sources claim 255 were built, and at least one source claims a Royal Navy warship was hit by a Hs-293D."

I've heard that 4.13 will have weapons cameras anyway, if it ever happens, which might make this request immediately outdated. I think the views are outside the weapon, however, and not a true "first person" view from the nose of the bomb.

I think such an addition would add yet again to an already huge "fun factor" that IL2 has.

Thanks for considering!

I certainly second this motion. Of course 4.13's bomb camera's would essentially serve the same purpose, though it really wouldn't be the same, that is if 4.13 will ever be released at all.
Is something like attaching the bomb-sight to the bomb completely out of the realm of possibilities?

That's what I tried - it kept crashing.

4.13 will be released in due course... although not feasible atm, this idea can be revisited then.

The Hs 293D could be added to the armament load of of the Arado 234c, which would make it a potent ship destroyer, great for a luft'46 version. ( Ar 234C-5/F1)
Could the in game Hs 293 be used with the same code as the homing X-7, or the Bv-246 glide bomb at this stage?
Anyway, thanks RooMan296, you beat me to the punch! ;)
