Sound Question....
« on: February 08, 2015, 05:41:41 PM »

A small sound-related question. Sometimes when a sound plays it will cause the volume on another sound to lower.

For instance, when I engage flaps, my engine sound will lower until the flap sound stops playing. Then the engine sound will go back to it's normal loudness.

It doesn't sound 'real'....more like some kind of technical issue. Any idea what may be causing this?

*Additional Info: I am using a custom sound file (p_dev_00.wav) for my flaps and this is the sound that I described above. I am also using custom gear sounds (e_dev_05_2.wav & p_dev_02.wav). However, these gear sounds are fine and they don't lower my engine volume when they are playing. I'm not sure why the custom flap sound is causing this issue.

**Running HSFX 7.0.3 - 4.12.2

I just came here to delete the topic because I found the answer to my issue. Can't do that now so we will leave it.

As far as the 'stereo' issue you mentioned, I'll just add some personal info I came across. (BTW, the flap sound file was Mono, not Stereo.)

While trying to resolve my issue, one thing I was looking at was the .wav file attributes. I did notice that the .wav files in the soundpack I am currently using have both Stereo and Mono. I have not noticed any problems with these files, although this is not the first time I have heard that all the .wav files should be in Mono.

So on that topic, I will ask you a question. Do you know of any free program where you could load an entire folder of .wav files and change all their attributes at the same time?

Currently I am using Creative WaveStudio, which came with my Creative ZX sound card. However, the software does not have that particular feature. I can only change file attributes one file at a time. Currently, I have 1,096 .wav files in my samples folder.

Hi you can do that with Audacity:

Create a chain that changes stereo to mono (file>edit chain>create a chain and put the stereotomono effect in it) then apply it to all the files (file>apply chain). It will batch process everything in the folder

I don't see any 'edit chain' in the file menu...or anywhere else. Nothing about  'edit chain' in the Help section either. Maybe we have different versions? Mine is version 1.2.6.

I placed 10 .wav files into Audacity as a test. I was able to 'Select All' and that was a good start. However, I don't see any command that will change the attributes of all the files at the same time.

Ok, I got 2.0.3. The chain has a stereotomono effect, but I also need to change two other attributes...sampling rate and bit rate. Unfortunately, I don't see those options.

I see some other places I may be able to change all 3 attributes but the program keeps crashing. It seems like it can't handle that many files at the same time. I'll play with it some more tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

You could change the sample rate with Audacity - load in the files into Audacity (highlight them and drag onto Audacity track window) and change the project sampling rate to whatever you want (it's in the bottom left of the main Audacity window). Then do 'export multiple' and choose wav. It will be fixed to 16 bit I believe.

Just another thought regarding sounds dropping out - have you increased the number of sound channels within IL2 sound settings, to its maximum (32 I think)

Thanks. I solved my original problem. It had to do with .prs settings. As far as Audacity, it seems that I can't load all of these .wav files at the same time...the program crashes. So, I will have to load them in smaller bunches. Thanks for the help!

Hello Aviar,

there's a little problem with any of your sounds if you have done some changes with Audicity.

If I remember right (I'd done some changings any years ago) you have to do it as follows:

1.) Open your with Audicity "redone" wave (.wav) files again and save these as ".mp3" on your desktop.

2.) Save your original files with a "-" in front of the name in your original sounds folder.

3.) After that you have to rename the endings of your new "xxx.mp3" files on the desktop to "xxx.wav".

(If windows ask you... really... - ...click "Yes"!)

4.) Copy the new renamed files from your desktop and paste them in your "sounds" folder.

I'll hope you understand my not so good english.

Regards,

Gerhard  ;)   :)

You're correct. I did find problems while converting .wav files...and not only with Audacity. I think I'll let the pros mess with these sound files. It's a lot more complicated than I thought.
