Shadow in the cockpit
« on: February 20, 2015, 01:13:40 AM »

Hello!
I would have posted this in the Requests board, but I'm not sure if it possible at all...

A question... is iot possible to have shadow in the cockpit in IL-2 1946 like in BoS abd CoD?

By the way, what happened with Le0ne? Why he is default 'member' now?

... that's an old dream we all have, since this would be really immersive ...  :P

AFAIK if it is possible, this is buried deep inside IL2 code, so out of our reach ...  :(

I also know that Freddy and Lutz were working on it, but their cooperation came to an end when Histomod site closed, and besides Freddy has now given up all modding ...  :-[

May be the DT ...?  :D

Self shadowing would be something to be done in the 3D rendering engine, inside the part which is in IL-2's native code (il2core.dll).
That part is out of reach for us modders and without wanting to belittle Freddy's attempts, while he might have found a way to work around this and give some impression "like" self-shadowing, he's been unable to deal with the core issue as well.

TD...
They have the sources so they could kick off an attempt to revamp the whole IL-2 3D part to other dimensions, but let's face it:
Besides the knowledge required and the amount of work this would mean, it's highly unlikely that TD is even allowed to perform such kind of upgrades to IL-2, since if they did and if they would give IL-2 the eye candy like newer games have (CloD, BoS), who should buy BoS then and why?
At the end of the day this isn't just a technical issue, but a commercial one as well.
Treat it like "limits intentionally never removed", that'll roughly cover it.

... Mike, I know the DT will never be allowed to do it for the very commercial reasons you gave (supposing they have the modders, time and tools needed), hence my smiling smiley ...  :D

Freddy had reached some sort of "look alike" cockpit dynamic shadows stage, but there were glitches and bugs, that's why he asked Lutz's help ...  ;)

As one of the best cockpit makers ever, if not the best, he knew cockpit dynamic shadows was the one feature missing in IL2, and that of course if somebody, some day, somewhere could find a way to implement them, then no other WW2 sim/game would be able to compete with comprehensive  IL2's maps, AC etc ...

Hold on Mike, you mean like they could have given us 4gb but we only got 3.5? I want a refund!  ;D

In that picture the IL-2 situation would be "the shadows are there, you just can't see them" :D

Sometimes (only sometimes) I was contemplating about this and since almost everything gets hacked by professional and amateur hackers, be it criminal or ethical hackers, I can't imagine it is difficult for them to crack the native code of IL2. Correct me if I am wrong.
Unfortunately I am not in the position that I know these people otherwise I challenged them to crack the code so modders could take advantage of it.
It would open a whole range of possibilities for us.

But hey, that is all wishful thinkin'.  ;)

This is all just a wild guess. But would not COD have the same game engine if IL2 game engine was upgradeable?
I have heard this game engine was stretched to the limits as is
