Stainless:

I've been following this thread off and on for the last little while and just caught up to it.

I noticed the runways crossing; is there flickering like we get when we place runway plates over each other in Il2? Would there be some way to make a runway plate be moved up or down? So, in one case you could have PSP crossing over a dirt runway and another time have the PSP under the dirt runway (a terrible example but all I could come up this early in the morning!).

Stainless hi!
I'm trying to run the effect editor. I downloaded and installed it but when I try to run it it crashes.
(I have no problem with the Il2, running with WinXP SP3)

No problems here, that all gets taken care of when the runways are baked into vertex arrays. The hidden sections are just removed.

You should get some kind of error report which will help me work out what is wrong.

That's the CLR catch all exception, so not much help.

Have you got XNA 4 installed?    (the installer should have prompted you to install it, but can be dodgy)
What version of .NET have you got installed?

Framework.Net 4.0
I am installing now the XNA 4 but it demands to have the Visual studio 2010 installed - the only version I could find that accept to install on XP is the "ultimate " which takes 4.5GB on the disk! I'm far to be sure that it's worth it. I'll install it however anyway to test the effect editor but will erase it after that. Apparently I'll be unable to use this editor beyond testing.

The XNA 4 runtime is all you need.

That doesn't require Vs 2010

At this stage I need feedback to try and get the look of the particle systems correct, when I have that I can finish off the editor and give you all the toys you need.

Until I have that, the tool is worthless.

I think I am going to have to junk this line of thought and use IL2 maps.

Biggest visual flaw in existing IL-2 maps IMO is the angular road and rail network. To look good they need to follow splines.

Other enhancements I have in mind may be unrealistic.

Ability to create cuttings and embankments (and tunnels) -- thinking rail here but also applies to road and water courses.
More realistic coastal modelling so that harbours fit into the landscape rather than sitting on it.

True sea floor model with water level changing with time (tidal effects).
Thames Estuary looks completely different at low tide. --- maybe that one is asking too much. :)
